We keep hearing about the labor shortage but companies don’t seem to be handing out huge raises.

Money talks, BS walks as far as a real “labor shortage” in most of the professional world. The trades and service industries do indeed have a shortage and that’s driving the higher wages to flip burgers.

The only way get real increases is to look for another job. I've been working professionally for over 25 years and the process is simple. I'm always looking for another job at 20% higher than my current pay.

You are correct. Pretty much the only way. I am on the verge of an offer right now that will range between a 57% and 100% raise over my current salary (based on the salary range for the new position). I could work in my current job for 30 more years and never touch the opening offer for the new job. There won't be any counter opportunities. It's just time to move on and do for mine.

Well, there you have it. Be better.

She should leave.

If she’s worth it, she’ll get it somewhere else.

If she isn’t worth it, then a 3% raise isn’t all that laughable.

And that is the very reason for the spike in unionization of so many workforces over the past few years.

The supply and demand curve.

Which, funnily enough, was not taken too well around these parts a few years ago when labor had an ever so slight advantage over employers for the first time in decades.

That's why I job hop in our health system. Got a 25% raise in 2 positions over 3 years. I still contribute to the hospitals goals in different roles and keep important people happy. I laugh at suckers that stay in the same position for a decade.

A 3% raise may be “laughable” but anytime a company wants to give you more money you take it. Lots of companies these days are letting people go or not giving a raise at all.

I guess she at least didn't get laid off like a few others at her place did. So, we've got that going for us.

If they are laying people off and she got a raise, they do find her valuable.

Yeah, eff that. Wife got a 15% raise in July and another 5% on top of that in December. And her December bonus was the second biggest one she's gotten there in 12 years. That's closer to being appreciated.

There is no more loyalty anymore with anything. Your wife has the right to shop around for a new job. Most employers no longer reward long time employees. The rewards are sign-on type bonuses to attract new employees. That’s the reality of the world we live.

Especially considering the health plan premium probably went up -3%. So at that point it’s essentially a wash.

Not sure if big or small company because that matters. Also matters that she got a raise at all. If she doesn't like it then get another job.
