For whatever reason, whenever you're driving and you start seeing numerous meat market stores, you can bet you're driving into ghetto-type places.

Covington is not really bad, but people used to move there to completely get away from the kind of stuff that took place with this incident. Some undesirable elements are creeping into Covington/the Northshore. It happens.

I am 45 and have lived in the area most of my life and that area has always been bad.

I'm not saying that it hasn't been, but people used to think Covington was like Mayberry for some reason. It has its problem spots as well though obviously.

This is not a surprise. Some people act as though Covington, Abita Springs, or Mandeville have no issues. Mandeville has a small hood, ditto Abita's, but Covington's hood is much larger. All three places have issues (Covington more so imo). Madisonville is about the only enclave that comes close to the "utopian" proclamation about West St. Tammany...and it has been overrun with some "less than desirable" elements from the southshore. Folsom and Bush are similar to Madisonville as well to a lesser extent. The Lee Road community, while seeing "gentrification", is still the white trash epicenter. I have lived here for 45 years. A lot of change has occurred, but I feel that most of that change has been good. While the area has issues here or there, it has been a great place to grow up, raise my family in, and...hopefully retire in. This incident, while highlighting some of the issues in the area, is still a pretty isolated incident.

The Madisonville Ghetto is around the elementary school. There isn't much to it, though. Covington's ghetto is limited to the 30's and President streets. Abita's is limited to some of the area between Abita Lumber and Claibourne Hill in Covington.
Overall, I'd rather be in west St. Tammany than any other place in the state.
