I didn’t think income is what made you “qualified for Medicaid”

Do you have any idea how much nursing homes charge?
Yes

You're not paying for that out of pocket. They run through all of the old person's funds and they can only keep less than 2K in their account at any time. They'll take their house, land, pretty much everything and do it with a smile. Lady literally told my wife that they LOVED taking land.
FACT. Reason I turn all my holding over to my kids. It has to be done 5 years before service.

You can pay for it if you purchase LTC insurance, but people hate it.
Which you usually look to purchase in your 60's...so when someone ends up with young on-set dementia at 51...what should their family do? Just throw up their hands and give the skilled nursing facility all their assets?

LTC will just annually increase your rate until it costs more than the care but it is nice to have for the first year or two.
Posted on 12/12/18 at 3:44 pm to deeprig9
LTC is a dead end insurance product, so much bad risk rating and pricing when it first came out, see Penn Treaty, Genworth, etc.
Now it’s so expensive as to not really make sense for an overwhelming majority of people

Meanwhile, a friend of mine, who has been gainfully employed for 15 years since he graduated college, lost his job a couple of months ago. He went about a month before he found a new job. He claimed unemployment for the month he was out of work.
He has had nothing but problems with getting his claim approved. Finally, they got it approved, paid him for 1 week, by which time he was back working with his new job, and now, they are "auditing" him, asking for information and pay stubs from his new job.

That isn't how it works. Nursing Homes are private businesses, like most hospitals. They charge money for their services. You must pay if you want their services.
Medicare will pay if you qualify. If you don't, you must pay. It's really that simple.

While I despise this shite, 100 people surveyed doesn't sound like an adequate pool
Posted on 12/12/18 at 3:49 pm to upgrayedd
A survey of 100 isn’t representative as a whole. BUT. If he turned up that many shitbirds out of such a small sample I’d hate to see the results for an audit of 1000 or 10000 enrollees.

True. Seems like a decent justification to go deeper

I'm not sure what's going on in this specific situation, but I know people that have a child with severe special needs that are often on Medicaid since their healthcare expenses get into the hundreds of thousands, and even millions, rather quickly.
The parents income is not considered if the dependent receiving Medicaid has special needs. I know, my child is one such recipient.
Posted on 12/12/18 at 3:59 pm to HailHailtoMichigan!
And the reason for this was that the state did not have a way to verify income eligibility.
However, last month ....
The state went operational with new upgraded Medicaid operations software which gathers income information from the state tax system so that eligibility can be confirmed.
Call back if the system put in place specifically to address this issue doesn’t change the situation.

Fraud and corruption are the hallmark of government spending. People cheat and nobody cares. Always has been, always will be. Military, health care, welfare, etc etc.

My special needs child also receives Medicaid as a secondary payer for my health insurance because of special needs. The kicker is that we were on the waiting list for this assistance for nine years. For nine years we private paid aides and for everything not covered by Blue Cross. Our in reimbursed out of pocket medical expenses averaged more than $35,000 per year.

It is when calculating for the standard deviation. The 85 million dollar amount is the high end of the 95% confidence interval.
