Did they have an 8 way tie or something? I thought by definition the valedictorian was the student that ranked #1 in that class.

Depends on the school. They probably all had the same GPA or 4.0. This is one of the reasons some schools with stratify these 4.0 GPAs by seeing who took more honors, AP courses and weighting them accordingly.

If the classes are weighted, or if they are all in gifted I have no problem with this. If, like at my high school, the grades count the same in regular, advanced, and gifted classes it is BS.

The "You are Not Special" speech. We need more things like this to this and the generations to come.

This is why schools need a plus/minus grading scale. Don't even get me started on the bullshite of 90 being an A in some schools while it's 94 at others.

if 8 kids took every AP class and made straight As their entire career, they'd all rank #1

100 point grade scale would fix this.

i was like #6, iirc. i don't know if we had a valedictorian. i think we may have just honored everyone with a 4.0+ GPA, b/c AP was relatively new and so was the 5-point scale.

Less inbreeding and Jerry Lee Lewis-style cousin marriages. Higher SAT and AP Scores.

It's a great thing. There are scholarships at many universities only available to valedictorians. By giving multiple student that designation the school is increasing the amount of students who have access to certain scholarships.

My high school gave out number grades (0-100) just to prevent this from happening. For outside reporting purposes, the grades were converted (94-100 "A", 86-93 "B", etc.), but on your report card you got a number. We had one valedictorian and one salutatorian. And, they were the two smartest kids in the class and deserved the honor.

My class (in Oregon) had 9 valedictorians, about 400 kids. It was bullshite though because at least one of the kids was in a couple of my classes, but he dropped them as soon as he realized he couldn't make A's. It's a shame when a title is more important than challenging yourself and learning as much as possible.

8 seems a little high. You can commend all of the students that finish with perfect GPAs but the title of "valedictorian" should be a little bit more of a process, not necessarily dependent on simply getting a perfect (or the highest GPA)

As other have mentioned, other criteria like standardized test scores, National Merit status and participation in extracurricular school activities like athletics and school clubs would have certainly knocked a few of those 8 out of contention.

The "real" answer is that schools don't want to get sued so GPA (regardless of class difficulty) is the only factor used.

I graduated with 428 others from my Montana high school 3 years ago. I believe we had 5 people with a 4.00 or above average, but they chose who would be valedictorian from amongst themselves.

Not in my case, entire class voted for two of the however many we had to give a speech.
