re: 767 cargo plane crash outside Houston

quote:I was just reading about that crash today, incidentally. I’m reading Joe Sutter’s book about designing the 747 right now (one of the best books I have ever read!) and went down the rabbit hole googling turbofan engines to understand how they work. Somehow landed on reverse thrust YouTube videos and then ended up looking up the Lauda Flight 004 crash. FWIW, according to the Wikipedia page, “In early August 1991, Boeing issued an alert to airlines stating that over 1,600 late model 737s, 747s, 757s, and 767s had thrust reverser systems similar to that of OE-LAV. Two months later, customers were asked to replace potentially faulty valves in the thrust reverser systems that could cause reversers to deploy in flight.” (Which I’m sure they did)
Lauda was operating a BMK-VIE 763 back in the early nineties that had an uncommanded RT deploy on the climb out of Bangkok.
Additionally, in the video I was watching, the pilot was explaining that (at least on the 737), now reverse thrusters can only be enabled when either the landing gear detects a compression from landing or when at or below 10 feet according to the altimeter. So I would think something like the reverse thrust engaging in flight causing the crash would be a highly unlikely scenario for this 767.

Hey Rome from this post it sounds like you finished your engineering degree. Did your finish your engineering degree or change your major? Just wondering I don't see you much anymore.

I did finish my engineering degree
and surprise, surprise, ended up in oil and gas! Recently I have taken an interest in aviation. I don’t work in that field, but I have such an interest in it. I spend a lot of my time trying to learn what I can! I have been floored by this book I’m reading by Joe Sutter (designer of the 747). I think everyone should read it!

Congrats I still remember when you were in the airport going to Africa. Man time flies. Keep discovering and keep exploring. Never thought my engineering degree would take me into the beer business.

Thanks! It’s definitely the right degree to get. I’d do it all over again.

Believe it or not I got a book a few months back from a English guy whom does some engineering in the plant where I work. It was about how the Germans built their tanks and how advanced their engineering was in building these tanks. I laughed at first about reading it but I am through 3 chapters already. I like learning new stuff also. Ok I will shut up for now. Also OP for hijacking this thread. RIP to the lives lost in this accident.

Local news states FBI taking over as possible crime scene.
They're probably checking local cameras for MAGA cap wearing suspects as we speak.

Live ATC audio from just prior to the crash. Sounds like they were already on the arrival and got offered deviations for heavy precip. I’m not familiar with the LINKK, but I’m assuming VANNS is on it. Not much else in there info wise.

So what happens to my packages?
Well, considering that someones children/siblings/parents/spouses were killed, I'd say no one gives a frick.

With all the onboard computers, how in the hell a plane ends nose down like that?
Posted on 3/1/19 at 7:52 am to GeauxxxTigers23
Yikes. Wings level nose down.
Posted on 3/1/19 at 7:56 am to jcaz
The absolute only things I could think of would be a complete flight control system failure or god forbid an intentional act.

NTSB twitter account says the CVR has been found. Hope they get a preliminary report out sooner than later.

intentional act.
Wonder about this.

Surveillance video of the last seconds of the Atlas Air 767. The plane was in straight nose down five when it hit.
That news report spent nearly 20% of its time discussing pilot fatigue. With 2 active pilots in the cockpit, plus an RJ jumpseater, in what world would fatigue have caused that plane to end up in a straight nose down attitude? Why even bring that up?

I have been wondering the same. Suicide?

Because it’s the news and they’ll bite on anything. The best way I’ve ever heard it put is “Imagine the bullshite they’re feeding you when you’re ignorant of the subject matter.”Agree it’s highly unlikely. Hope to see some answers soon.

What if he knew it was going down and took it there to minimize damage/civilian casualties?
That thing was going damn near straight down
