I'm curious if Houston was playing their "keep them out the class B airspace" game and they hit someone out there with no transponder on or something.

I’ve read a little about them. Something about flying mining equipment into Russia. I know some guys at Tepper, if you’re familiar with them.

It’s strange because the cell was to the northwest of them I think. I heard that hail can be uplifted and thrown away from the storm. I wonder if they hit rogue hail and lost the windscreen. At 7000 feet on the approach they had no time to correct. Just my .02
I know a guy that flies for Delta internationally. He said that the storms at the equator can throw hail over a hundred miles because the storms are so strong.

They do a lot of Papua New Guinea work. A couple planes over in africa. I think some New Zealand to Antarctica runs one month out of the year. Really cool flying but the pay pretty low, especially for the minimums they advertise.
I’m familiar with Tepper. I fly King Airs for one of the sandbox companies myself.

Ahh, ok. I’ve got some friends at L3 too. You probably do similar work to them.

Wouldn’t we have heard about someone else being missing by now?

Maybe.
A weekend warrior at 6500' not talking to anyone isnt unheard of.
That was a super steep descent, and the reports of people hearng the engines roaring kinda confuse the whole thing. Very odd situation. Could have been a microburst, or a seriously odd control malfunction, especially for a 76.
I know I've been concerned going into Houston a bunch of times, as they like to keep you in "Indian country" (out of the class B, under 10,000') as much as possible.
It's awful for the 3 ppl on board and their folks, I hope we at least find something that makes sense out of it.

You want to fly DC9s and DC6s?
Posted on 2/23/19 at 7:05 pm to RedFoxx
They fly C-130’s now.
But DC-6’s would be cool

This incident is eerily similar to the Eastern DC-8 crash into Lake Pontchartrain back in the 60's. Went in nose first climbing out of 15000. Malfunctioning trim compensator. Bodies were washing ashore at Fountainbleu. Fuselage buried deep into the lake bottom.
Lauda was operating a BMK-VIE 763 back in the early nineties that had an uncommanded RT deploy on the climb out of Bangkok.
Premature, but just a couple of thoughts.

That's right. I wouldn't want to fly those.

Actually, you're right. More fun than a CRJ.

I decided long ago that I’m not chasing a paycheck my entire life at the expense of not enjoying my job. But I also am not willing to work for peanuts haha.

I feel like it has to be a microburst. Wish I could see the overlay of the cell with the flight path in real time. But would he really fly right into that? If ATC denies deviation why not say frick you and squak 7700?

They're gonna have a helluva time retrieving parts for the investigation. That whole area of the Bay has a nice thick layer of mud/silt sitting right beneath the surface. Cant even really wade fish that area because the silt is so bad

Why would shipping aircraft be more vulnerable than passenger?
For one thing, passenger aircraft are not allowed to ship bulk lithium ion batteries as cargo. The cargo operators have no such restriction. I see monthly FAA reports on Li-ion incidents in aircraft cabins and cargo pits. It's only a matter of time before a Li-ion fire takes down an aircraft. Remember the Valujet crash where the O2 generator fire burned through control cables?
