No survivors. Damn.
Live
They have a chopper in the air reporting on the crash now.

Not sure if serious.

skill and experience of pilots compared to passenger airlines
Wrong on both accounts. Atlas hires a lot of pilots with little more than RJ experience. Many use it as a stepping stone to the " majors ". Also a lot of veteran pilots who like the lifestyle. Atlas is notorious for working their crews hard. Their bread and butter is ad-hoc 747 charters that operate worldwide, and operating lease services for airlines that dont have a dedicated cargo operation. They used to fly a passenger charter from Houston to Angola, I believe for Chevron. They also do a lot of Military charters.
To equate Atlas with Fedex/UPS is far off the mark.

Looking at that tracker, the route from IAH and MIA is all this plane flys. The altitude chart kind of tells the story. Basically started descending rapidly and couldn't recover. If it hit the trinity bay I guessthey were trying to make it to Hobby instead. Possible ditch in the bay to avoid hitting populated ground?
Nah. That doesnt happen unless they're on fire or out of gas.
And even then, it wouldn't be a nosedive at 7000fpm

Not even remotely close to being true.

Atlas, a lot of the airlines really, have been hiring 63/64 year olds because of the pilot shortage.
Also Atlas is having a really tough time getting qualified applicants because of their shitty pay and work rules. They have one of the worst union contracts in the industry. I’ve heard they may hire 15 guys for a training class and be lucky to get 3 or 4 to show up.

Any chance this was intentional?
Posted on 2/23/19 at 5:08 pm to Cosmo
I would say that’s as unlikely as it would be in any crash. I can’t specualte yet. Could be any number of things.

Based on everything I’ve seen this could be either
1. Weather
2. Control surface failure
Falling out of the sky open happens in catastrophic failures. There was a thunderstorm cell nearby. Curious as to if hail had anything to do with this.

Possibly an unrecognized microburst?

Flightaware tracker shows last coordinates near Trinity Bay
The good news is that flightaware says that the plane was on time. The bad news is that Trinity Bay was its intended destination.

It’s strange because the cell was to the northwest of them I think. I heard that hail can be uplifted and thrown away from the storm. I wonder if they hit rogue hail and lost the windscreen. At 7000 feet on the approach they had no time to correct. Just my .02

Atlas is subject to the same age limit as every other 121 operation.

Rumors are the pilots were former regional airline guys and a Mesa jumpseater.

I know several current and former Atlas pilots so I’m well versed on what goes on there. A 63/64 year old pilot is still required to retire at 65 and Id be willing to bet that less that 5% of new hires are that age. They’re mostly hiring guys trying to go to Fedex/UPS that are tired of the regional lifestyle or laid-off 135/corporate guys that just need a paycheck until something better comes along. Guys are spending less than a year at Atlas before being picked up by Fedex/UPS so the experience excuse someone used earlier is BS as well.

Yeah I know all that. I have some buddies there too. But they will hire anyone who will actually show up for work at this point.
Posted on 2/23/19 at 5:41 pm to GeauxxxTigers23
Damn, I’ve got a buddy there who’s a captain on the 76. I was able to touch base with him though. I’ve given a lot of thought to applying there, but always talk myself out of it. ACMI isn’t that appealing to me.
Posted on 2/23/19 at 5:45 pm to HerkFlyer
I’m looking at Kalitta and Omni. Maybe Western Global but I haven’t been able to find much info on them. But I’m looking at ACMI as a career. I think Atlas would work as a good stepping stone before you went to one of the big boys.

I’ve heard good things about Kalitta.
