Had the same thing with my Ram last week. Was told to make an appointment it would be 3-4 weeks out. If I drop it off it’ll be about a week before they see it.

said it can still take over a month to get some parts. Supply chain is still an issue.

Took me 4 months to get an intake manifold for a F-150

If demand is that great - can they more techs, train them, pay them more - would that help? If demand is that great, shouldn’t BMW set up their own supply chain of parts inventory?

My elderly mother bought a Honda from a Honda dealer in Metairie. She would bring her car in for an oil change and servicing. Her dome light stopped working so she told the service writer about it and he said they would check it. He comes back and tells her that it is a wiring problem going to the light and they would have to access the wiring and Yada, Yada, Yada. Tells her estimated cost to fix would be $200. She declines. A few days later I'm at her house and she mentions it to me. I go to her car, remove the dome light bulb, go to AutoZone and buy the exact same bulb for a few dollars, put in new bulb, now the light works again. So they were trying to charge her $200 to change a bulb.

They are not dealerships, they are stealerships.

fricking assholes. I’d call the service manager and cuss him out and never set foot in there again.

My mechanic (independent) is booking appointments 7-10 days out now. He has a pretty loyal and set staff. I haven't seen much turnover at all there. He's just super busy.

BMW is switching to electric. Why bother training to fix their unreliable ICE vehicles when they will be a thing of the past in 10 years?

I often wonder if these “staffing” problems are better characterized as “payroll” problems.

I caaaane’t fiiiind gooood peeeeoople.

Vs.

We are hemorrhaging money and can’t afford enough staff.

Possible.

You can find people. Just not for what they are willing to pay. Offer more money and get more serious applicants.

Yeah I'm sure it's both. Where do we have to draw the line though on what is enough pay to get people to come to work?
There was mention the other day of people at an ice cream shop making $21/hour.

Yeah sure, businesses can keep bumping up the pay. How much are you going to be willing to pay for the services is the question.

180k isn’t bad on this ICE, original clutch…which is goddamn amazing. Now, if this thing breaks down on me on the way home…I’m coming after y’all for jinxing me.

My whole issue is with the lack of updates. How fricking hard is it to send you a text or email saying hey sorry no movement just yet but we are progressing. I could understand going 24 hours without an update but to go 4 days is insanity. It rolled over the weekend so I forgot about it and then Monday morning hit and I got heated thinking wait a second..

but this thread is making me feel a lot better.

Independent shops that treat their mechanics well aren't hurting nearly as much a dealerships. Turns out if you pay people well and treat them like they are valuable, they stick around and tell their buddies where good places to work are.

Dealerships are notorious for being shitty places to be a mechanic. Anyone who has some experience and an bit of drive will go work elsewhere after working for a dealership. I can't stress enough how badly mechanics talk about ships. I'm sure there are a few that have learned how to keep employees but wide and large they are inexplicably shitty.

For the Mercedes, Land Rover, Porsche and Jaguar dealerships wouldn’t they have higher quality and more specialized mechanics?

I don't know why anyone has to draw a line. I don't get people who claim a wage is "plenty" but yet those positions are going unfilled. Sounds like free market problem that will solve itself. Follow the money.

Wink wink, it is how you write the story when you are on commission at the dealership.

It’s a combination
Labor shortage
Proper training or ability to get training in smaller markets

Conditions
Most situations it is hot
Dirty

Women don’t throw themselves at mechanics.

Men don’t throw themselves at female mechanics.

It is what it is.

It is a great field am for a young person to get into if they get training.
