re: 52 years ago today, Jim Croce’s plane went down in Natchitoches

His final concert was just 42 minutes and included a set of 10 songs with no encore.
Every 5 years or so, I take a dive into reading about the concert and the plane crash. There was a big lawsuit by survivors, and the locals cut down the pecan tree that the plane clipped,
Note to airport planners: Don’t leave a big arse pecan tree out where a plane might hit it.

Over zealous Natchitoches police wanted to bust Croce for weed. Croce got tipped off and they called the pilot at his hotel to hurry to the airport. Out of shape pilot ran all the way down highway 1 to the airport and had a heart attack during takeoff. Or so the legend goes.

A friend of mine made the last concert, the next morning, after waking up, his roommate said, “Jim Croce’s dead!” They went out to the crash site.
I saw Jim’s son, AJ, up in Woodstock, Ga. Enjoyable concert. Played a bunch of his Dads songs. Had a video of him and Jim, very touching.

Seriously though. How in the hell was he only 30? In what you linked he looks at least 60.

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old lone ranger
And you don't mess around with Slim

I feel like I should comment on this thread. RIP Jim. Such a huge loss.

President of the NSU student council at that time went on to be a liquor salesman, probably retired now but he booked Croce for the concert. Something happened to Croce and he had to cancel. There's an old PBS documentary about the crash and this guy was in it. Said Croce wanted to make it up, so they rebooked him and his band. The rest is history. A buddy's brother who worked at the airport said the seats in the plane were gone the next morning and in somebody's dorm room.

What's sad / ironic / admirable is the concert was a make-up date from the time before he hit it big, but because he was a man of his word he didn't try to cancel the gig altogether. And I clearly remember hearing the news on the radio before going to school. It was our version of "bad news on the doorstep" and Buddy Holly.
In my later years I've learned to muddle through on guitar well enough to play with others, but if I could choose to play like anyone is would be Maury Muehleisen. The sounds of Maury and Jim on acoustics with Jim's storytelling lyrics left a huge imprint on a generation. They made 70's singer-songwriters cool. Music both you and your Dad enjoyed. RIP

Rick Beato - What makes this song great
This is a really good breakdown of the song. IMO, one of the the greatest songs ever written. My favorite part is the last verse….
“Operator, well, let's forget about this call
There's no one there I really wanted to talk to
Thank you for your time
Oh, you've been so much more than kind
You can keep the dime”
It’s my favorite not just because what he says, but what he doesn’t say. That verse doesn’t follow the same pattern as the other verses. The last line stops short and lets the song breathe. Freakin’ hits me EVERY time!

Man I have no clue why all those rock stars in the 70s flew those little planes all over the South. It’s seems like a dozen of them crashed and killed everywhere. Several in Mississippi I know

I know a gentleman who was a student at NSU during this tragic event. After the local investigation was completed, he was given the entire police report, investigation summary, original pictures from the scene and everything the University on the crash. He’s kept it in his safe all these years and never wanted to profit from what he has. Won’t be surprised if the “Croce folder” is eventually handed over to Jim’s son to keep in the family.

My friends aunt workedfor the DA in Natchitcoches Parish. She catalogued the luggage. Lots of interesting things.
Someone said the sheriffs office was going to bust the plane. The were trying to get out of there and that was the root cause.
