1. Your expenses will likely go down during this event.
2. You will pay less taxes.
3. Find a side job, delivery may be an option
4. Cut the maid, the yard man, start being a do it yourself person.
5. Family needs to babysit, tutor online, find something to make money.
6. Dip into emergency fund.
7. Sell a vehicle.

Sounds like they are trying to keep people employed. They can go about it another way if people don't buy in.
Applaud your company for making this effort instead of cutting people. I am sure they are hoping this is short term as well.

Instead I would take the 50 then when business gets back right ask to be compensated.
Let me know where this actually works. Then send me an application. frick a cut. Only way I’d agree and stay is to get a written guarantee that I get the cut + back within a year.

quote:Sounds like a situation where I’d be looking for another job. The person who puts in that kind of work 51 weeks a year should be at the bottom of the list for who gets a 50% paycut
but when you are always working 70+ hours a week a take one week a year for vacation then this happens

50% salary cut for the foreseeable future until this corona virus hysteria passes. I dont exactly live paycheck to paycheck but I dont think my family can survive in our current situation for more than a month with that kind of cut.
Consider that your after tax cut will be far less than 50%, and good luck.

Boss man is using the hysteria to save him some cash. I’d ask to see the books or tell him to GFY
If you’re silly enough to ask to see the books you wouldn’t understand them.

Tell him fine but you'll be doing 50% less work
He’s probably doing 100% less work. That’s the problem.

And...? He merely asked. Ask your employer if you can frick his wife.

We should be discussing why your emergency fund is only 2 weeks pay.

I know the company has been making money but just has a lot of projects canceled or put on hold indefinitely. They always talk about taking the good with the bad when your salary but when you are always working 70+ hours a week a take one week a year for vacation then this happens... it's more like taking the bad with the worse. I have sent them a response pleading my case that my workload will not be affected as much as others. Hopefully they will have a positive response in the morning or I guess I will start looking for other options.
Your boss either does not know the effort you put forth or does not value your work.
The other side is, you may see yourself more valuable than you actually are in the companies eyes.

Take it and work as little as you can get away with, then change jobs ASAP when things are back to normal

Good lord
I'm sure it's not the best time to be looking for a job with this mess going on but you have to tell him to beat it if that is serious
Only a cuck would take that

Man, you need a ‘laid off’ nest egg.

I just went on vacation and paid for another. I had a large IRS bill this year and money saved to pay them. Im just moving the IRS money to my checking and going to live on that.
I'll worry about the IRS later.

How exactly are you not living paycheck to paycheck if you can't go a month with half your salary?
Wouldn't that necessarily mean you couldn't go 2 weeks with no salary, which literally means you are living paycheck to paycheck?

I feel you man. My wife and I make about the same amount of money. She's about to have to take a 100% pay cut for the foreseeable future. Once her office closes, she wont be getting paid until they open back up

Thursday last week my company did the same. Friday they cut several (including me) Directors. So it could be worse.

Everyone here is assuming so much. Our company is giving all salaried employees a 50% cut for the foreseeable future, this includes owners/managers.
Work/orders are down over 85%, relatively certain owners are not taking a paycheck to make this all even happen.
50% now while this blows over and everyone can come back to work, or we all get laid off and make 0% and hopefully have a job to come back to.
Not every company is the same/is being effected the same by this.
This just sucks.

If not just take the guaranteed FMLA at 66% pay and stay at home.
FMLA is unpaid. That 66% is probably from short term disability and not applicable in this situation.
