Forty-nine percent of Americans believe GMO foods are worse for your health than non-GMO foods, according to the poll released Monday by the Pew Research Center, up from 39 percent in 2016.

“In the absence of credible independent long-term feeding studies, the safety of GMOs is unknown,” said the Non-GMO Project, a nonprofit that advocates for labeling food that has GMOs.

But an exhaustive 2016 report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine found that GMO crops were just as safe as regular crops.

I can’t comment until Mingo weighs in so that I know what the correct opinion is.

People who are anti-GMOs are also, by extension, pro-starvation in poor, developing countries.

It's similar to saying all processed food is bad for you.

Well it can be, depending on the process (heating and adding shite to seeds and such to get oil = BAD; churning butter and cold pressing olives = not bad), ingredients and quantity. Just like unprocessed food can be bad for you depending on those same factors (although less likely to be).

If you GM an O to increase the sugar content then sure that's not good. But it isn't the GM itself that makes the O bad. It's the resulting content, which you can just factor into your calorie and macro intake.

That's too complicated I know.

Bad? How about some evidence?

It's one thing to be skeptical but to say it's harmful is dumb, unless you can show a theoretical mechanism for how it damages people's health, or a correlation between GMO consumption and negative outcomes.

I feel like the stats are right where they should be. The article says the safety is unknown. And it’s about 50/50 on what the public feels. So half is wrong and half is right.

When more info is available and there is an answer to GMO effect, then yeah I would expect numbers to change

It’s almost impossible now.

You have to grow chickens/cows without ever feeding them commercial feed because it’s all made from gmo crops.

It’s why we cannot label US farm raised catfish organic even though we don’t use growth hormones and don’t have to use antibiotics. But can’t do anything about the feed

Point being, there's no such thing as a true "heirloom" crop due to nature and about 4.5 billion years.

Watched a report on chemical additives specifically color, flavor and smell recently. Chemistry compound additives we consume daily in all forms. Reading more about it, we have zero idea what we are putting in our bodies. None. The loopholes of the 70's and beyond protect recipes as "trade secret" or proprietary. No one has to disclose. I'm starting to think this is the genesis of our cancer/other major disease states, including the Autism rise and prevalence.

Not GMO's specifically.

But the companies processing our lives, period.

I like how organic milk has a disclaimer that the bovine growth hormone levels are no different than non organic varieties.

People are just fricking stupid. I'd be all for giving everyone an IQ test and culling the dumbest 10% just to give the rest of us a fighting chance.

I sure would miss you guys, though.
