Earlier this year one passed me in a no passing zone, in a school zone during active school time. This in a small town with notorious cops. He was still there when I came back through an hour later, they were cuffing him up. DWI at 8AM on a school morning. Texas redneck trash.

Well, you need to get it off their lot stat. They are charging you up to 40$ a day for storage.

Pay them, get your car and then get an attorney. You can't argue with them as long as they have the car hostage.

back in the 90s when i lived in houston they would drive like a bat outta hell to get to a crash scene..often backing onto the interstate FROM THE EXIT RAMP going 60 mph to get in line with the other tow trucks.

there would always be a line of 5 or 6 tow trucks like vultures next to any crash.

i'm thinking they changed the rules around that; back then i think the police drew straws to pick a towing company.

They towed it to their lot so they could get payment from the insurance company first, after that they were going to tow it to the body shop.

They said they were in rotation with other tow companies and they all charge like that if the police calls them.

I’m so confused.

Did the police have you towed after you hit the guard rail? Either you’re leaving out details or you’re getting scammed.

Maybe they broke their toe. If you've ever toed a car you know how painful it can be.

I had it towed to a body shop in town only to find out they towed it to the tow trucks lot and charged me $4000.

Now tell us you left it there a month and they charged you $200/day storage...

No way in hell a tow costs $4000. Get itemized cost and take to the AG office. May have to call a lawyer. Threaten to call the local tV station

4K to toe a vehicle half a mile. Ouch. I've had mine towed 30 miles for less that $200

Yea I’d threaten legal action. That’s an outrageous charge

threw change and the person and called them a derogatory name. Calmly, they told me to pick it up and hand it to them. It was one of two times I’ve said that derogatory name to someone’s face in my life.

Did you use the “a” or hard “er”

Damn... I've had my 40ft RV towed for $750 and that included unbolting the driveshaft so the transmission doesn't get damaged.

Seems about like Acadian Ambulance charging me $5500 to bring me from Oschner to OLOL because their CT scan machine was broken.

Gotta admit, I never considered “not having to do business directly with a tow company” as a benefit of the roadside assistance I pay $4/month for, but you’re absolutely right.

recently had to deal with a tow company outside of AAA, it is a long story for a bar tender and very shite day/expensive day

The driver wouldn't take credit card, he could but wouldn't, thankfully my car guy is cool and paid cash then added it to my tab.

Reminded me of being drunk in New Orleans before Uber and having a cab driver take me to ATM because the "card machine is down" or they don't accept cab accounts

yeah try this one.

While the police may call it a civil matter initially, the body shop and towing company won’t be able to show any proof that OP agreed to it. Thus, theft and extortion are in play.

Good luck enforcing a judgment to get $4k back

Idk about that at all. But I know it’s a daily charge. And I know Louisiana has limits on how much a tow place can charge. But there may be more than a simple tow charge here.

Also the tow company said they would “ work with me” if I had to pay the 4k?

Yep hit the guard rail pretty hard to bend the bumper under, air bags did not deploy.

I went to city hall to complain and they said to got to the JP to see if they would help but said it would take some time to get before a Judge.

Pretty standard operation for police tows, it's a scam for sure but legal. How much of the $4k is storage?

ETA - Going to the media tends to work pretty well for situations like these, most tow companies depend on local, cash customers thus they need a good reputation. Just make sure you have all your ducks in a row.
