What doesn't make sense is that you don't realize how stupid you are.
The study said there was no improvement of actual work. When they worked 4 days, they didn't come in late, didn't leave early, didn't miss work, didn't slack off, and yet surprisingly, didn't improve their actual work.
Do you see? Or must I go on to step 2 of ELI5?
Please do keep telling us all how doing the same amount of work in 32 hours is actually less productive than doing it in 40 hours.
ETA: I mean, you actually break down what makes them more productive in your post while arguing that they are less productive. That's impressive.

There is a difference in people who work for a living and people who have a job for a living.
I could never get all my work done in 20% less time and neither could any other person who has maxed out their productivity.
I do agree that this is a great idea for most “low energy” workers.

I'd actually be a bigger fan of keeping the 5 day work week but cutting the day from 8 hours down to 6 hours. I'd love to work 8-2 without a lunch break and then head home for the day instead of working 8-5 with an hour lunch break.
The same amount of work would get done, but a longer evening at home would be awesome.
I'd rather do 4 x 10 (or 9 or 8). The commute isn't worth it if you work a short day.

My official schedule is 4-10s. I’m usually at work between 11-12 hrs Monday thru Thursday. I used to be in construction, where I was usually at work 11-12 hrs Monday thru Friday and often Saturdays too.
I’m more productive now than I ever was before. And my general quality of life is drastically superior now than it was before. So i don’t mind putting in hours when necessary because I know it’s going to preserve my quality of life.
All of you people that equate productivity to hours spend butt in seat need to retire and go away. There’s a reason obesity, heart disease, and poor stress management are so high in this country. Having no life outside of work and no way to disconnect and relieve stress isn’t healthy. And it has nothing to do with generational bullshite.

I technically work 5 days a week, but Friday is simply for travel or to turn in reports what I’ve done for the week, which unless I can’t take a Thursday night flight out only takes me maybe 2 or 3 hours of work on Friday. The 4 day work week has merit in certain industries.

What if you are a hairdresser who can cut a guys hair in 15 mins and work 10 hr days. (40 clients per day)
What if you are a surgeon who can take out 3 gallbladder and an hour over a 10 hour day. (30 cases of surgery).
How are you (Mr. Genius) going to do more work in less time? Enlighten us please.

What kind of socialist bullshite is this? Pay people when they are not working?

I believe the broader point is that arbitrarily spending however many hours a day at the office isn't necessary to get your work done.
Hours =/= productivity
Productivity == productivity
Work life balance is a real thing and I've easily witnessed salaried employees still manning that clock - even though out of 40-45 hours in office a week, easily 10-15 are playing games on phone, etc. Only staying in office because the boss is hour-dependent.
In retrospect, the best productivity I've personally seen is 4/40 and 9/80 types schedules. We're talking professionals here, so people care about their work and company. But sitting around just to clock hours is IMO counterproductive.

I'm pretty sure I could knock out a week's worth of work in one day if I put my mind to it.
I did the math and I'm basically paid 1000 dollars per hour of actual work.
Just sucks I have to be there the other 49 hours a week.

There are definitely some old school guys out there that run companies that would freak out if that was put into place.
For whatever reason, there is still an old mindset that if people aren’t glued to an office 5 days a week, then productivity isn’t occurring

Have a older fried with a business that has 4-5 employees, he says he can do all the work he gets in a given week in 3-4 days but keeps the office open for 5 so his employees get 40 hours pay. I told him why don't you close on Friday and just pay everyone for 40 hours anyway, that he would net the same amount of money, and have a 4 day work week. He said there is no way I am paying them for time they are not in the office.

If you can't tell the difference between someone who provides a direct service and someone who works in an office i.e the article and your comment, I can't help you.
