A New Zealand firm that let its employees work four days a week while being paid for five says the experiment was so successful that it hoped to make the change permanent.

quote:

The firm ran the experiment — which reduced the workweek to 32 hours from 40 — in March and April this year, and asked two researchers to study the effects on staff.

quote:

“Supervisors said staff were more creative, their attendance was better, they were on time, and they didn’t leave early or take long breaks,” Mr. Haar said. “Their actual job performance didn’t change when doing it over four days instead of five.”

Hmmm, where do I sign up for this stuff.....in NZ I guess. All sorts of uproar by companies if this was implemented here....what does the OT think?

I'm pretty sure I could knock out a week's worth of work in one day if I put my mind to it.

In the short term Im sure it will work, long term I think employees will get complacent and revert back to old habits.

I'm sure there would be all sorts of uproar in New Zealand also if it was "implemented". This was a company making it's own decision. It really depends on the kind of work being done. This wouldn't go over well at a McDonald's.

I believe the broader point is that arbitrarily spending however many hours a day at the office isn't necessary to get your work done.

ETA: This is obviously dependent on the industry. I don't need to be in the office 40 hours a week to do my job, but I do need to be available Monday through Friday.

I can see this working. Most people in their 9-5 can probably get most of their work done in 1-3 hours

Im a big fan of Tim Ferris’ 4 hour Workweek. Definitely fits within that theme

Actual work sure most can complete in 4 days. But there's still a menial amount of things you need at least 40 hours of work to be around for. A couple extra emails, some phone calls, a couple meetings, etc. Unless you have a secretary to do all of your planning and no team to work with in order to meet and coordinate, you simply can't just get 40 hours of work done in 32 hours.

Different people are motivated by different things. This may work for some people and not for others. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, especially when you consider different types of work.

You can do this at my company if you are productive and efficient. We are project oriented, so you are left alone as long as you do your job.

Judging by everyone’s post count, I’d say you are correct

He's not entirely wrong. I have this schedule. It's not so much officially off on Friday as it is known that you don't have to come in if you took care of your stuff. I still check out pretty early during the week when I can/want to.

This would work great in my office. Fridays are crazy slow, about 95% of my work gets done Mon-Thur. There just isn't much going on Fridays so I just sit around.

We are long overdue for a reduction in standard working hours. Working hours have remained steady while production has skyrocketed over the last few decades.

Thankfully it appears the old guard that wants your butt in the seat for 40+ hours is dying out.

Most people work 40 and are productive for 32 and getting paid for 40

This situation is ideal to work 32, be productive for 24 and get paid 40

WIN!!!

I would be all for this, but you can’t close the doors on the extra day off. I would try to schedule rotataing days for employees where you will still work 4 but the extra day off falls on a random day.

Lafourche did something similar to this, but closed the doors on Friday. That in my opinion is dumb. What if I need an emergency permit, then I will need to wait until Monday.
