I think a lot of people have woken up to the fact that being a server at a low to mid tier restaurant kinda fricking sucks

Server jobs have been the same for decades. seems weird that there would be a mass epiphany, that an entire generation suddenly all came to hate waiting tables at the same time.

quote:

Are they attempting to staff these restaurants at server's minimum wage, or have they bumped base wage? Are they offering sick days?

I would have to assume the restaurants don’t want to be understaffed and losing business and are therefore offering what pay they can afford.

Ugghhhh ok but not really

Being fair, we cook most nights. But all the restaurants I have heard others rave about over the years (Graffiti comes to mind) have been disappointing. Not bad mind you, but just....meh.

Don’t even try to justify yourself to the food snobs of the OT. They’re absurd people.

Tragic

But I thought the point of Hooters was to go gawk at the waitresses?

Well, I wouldn't go to hooters for that, but I also wouldn't go for the food...must be the reasons why I don't go to hooters......learned something new today.

Maybe with the current financial climate, people weren't making $200-$400 per shift at low to mid tier restaurants anymore?

What financial climate have you been living in for the last 18 months? It hasn’t been the US if you think the climate has been bad. It’s about to get bad, but it definitely hasn’t been bad.

He may be functionally retarded. If so he can’t help it. They have been offering $15-20/hour at fast food restaurants for the last 12 months, as long as you don’t shite in the food. You can have no skills at all and make $35,00-40,000 a year right now. But people don’t want to have to show up. They just want the $35,000 they got sitting at home during covid. And it is so unfair.

You’re worried about Hooters and Bubba Gumps?

Why?

Why not just make something? Can you cook? Enjoy the beach. I laugh at the people who go to the beach just to come in at 3pm, dress up like your going to church, just to go eat.

They’re gone and a breakfast place is in their location.

Had you not ever ordered Graffiti’s fried green tomatoes with crawfish garlic cream sauce? It was killer.

It was, and I have no idea how they screwed it up. It was a major cash cow. The owners/family were asking publicly for loans on Facebook a few years ago to get it back up and running. Major tale of mismanagement.

The old man that owned it was not the one begging for money.

The location was sold to the old man as as the first franchise store. The franchise never grew and never offered any assistance and after several years the old man stopped paying any royalties. The family took him to court and won so he had to shut down. The family then begged for money to get started. The first two years after he shut down I would see him around town and he would tell me he w was thinking about reopening under another name. He never did and I have not seen him in almost 2 years.

A big wave of them came through 30A about 5-6 years ago. It was like they were working everywhere for a time. They seem to have all moved on, though.

I keep seeing this dual pronged argument: restaurants are offering all of this money, but people got paid to sit at home during Covid, so no one will take it.

Yet, every time I’ve seen the small print on those pay offers from restaurants, it always includes projected tips, with the same base pay and no paid leave. And people in southern states haven’t been “paid to stay home during Covid” in, what, over a year? How can any reasonable person still trot that out as a reason for why people aren’t filling certain jobs now?

Not weird at all, and the one thing I would “blame” the payments during Covid on. People are creatures of habit. We tend to just go about our daily lives without giving it much thought. During Covid, you had tons of people whose daily routines got shattered. When faced with the prospect of returning to that previous routine, people are naturally going to give it more thought. And it seems like, when they did, a lot of people who were previously servers decided they didn’t want to go back to that work.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’ve noticed a massive uptick in the number of clearly first time servers in the last year or so.

Because the alternative theory, that greedy businesses would rather be short staffed than pay market wages, does not make sense either. Frankly I don’t understand what’s going on with the labor shortage right now.
