nice middle class area growing up

my parents left 2 years before Katrina hit and got on the other side of the Seabrook (sorry... Sen. Ted Hickey) Bridge... about the only thing left for my extended family in tEast is the hardware store on Downman

I'll never forget the NY idiot on NPR lecturing about the merits of gun control- and said this when referring to New Orleans:

" Louisiana has some of the most relaxed gun laws in America....Those crazy Cajuns are mowing each other down, in New Orleans!"

My wife's principal and lawyer husband live in that area. Them and the surrounding neighborhood are a bunch of well off black professionals that for some reason choose to still live in the East.

Serious question, why is the east such a shithole? I'm not talking about the obvious, uh, symptoms. Why hasn't that area been gentrified? Seems like there's tons of space for development and multiple routes into the city.

It hit a bad point and there was no going back. Everything there is built like shite and there is no redeeming qualities about the area.
It’s not close enough to the parts of Nola that people like, so nobody is going to invest there
