I'm shocked 50% of the retirement eligible cops in America don't retire.

I would hate to see this....that city can't afford to be any more lax on crime. They had better figure out how to retain good cops.
Before Covid starting taking off, my wife and I visited New York City at a rare point in time where both of our days off were aligned. We spent a week there in the Essex house, which is still fantastic. Walking up Madison Ave in the mornings was still a cool experience. All the shopping and shows were just as good as ever. The restaurants were top notch as usual - including a couple of old favorites that I hope survive the Covid shutdown.
But we noticed a significant increase in the homelessness and cleanliness problem in the city in all neighborhoods (not just midtown). We had not been there together in about 4 years - but we stayed in the same neighborhood as we usually do. It was an obvious decline from just 4 years ago. City leadership has failed that town, and I'm very concerned that it's been in decline for a while and will continue a downward trajectory. A shortage of law enforcement will only make those problems worse.
Chicago gets a lot of shite on this board - but the Chicago loop is cleaner, nicer, and safer than most of Manhattan now.

This is really dumb and bordering on fake news. You're not taking into account just how ridiculously massive the NYPD is.
There are 45,000 uniformed police officers in the NYPD.
If the average career is 30 years that means they should average around 1800 retirees a year, or 300 every two months.
In conclusion: 272 seems low.

Frame it how you want. It's still dumb to sky scream over NYPD cops retiring unless the number is significantly more than 1800 officers a year.
NYPD already spends $2.8b a year on retirement benefits.
