heard about this last semester in my neuro class, first time seeing an article about it

The Ice Bucket Challenge of two summers ago did more than deliver a chilly thrill to millions of people.
The money it raised has led to an important breakthrough in ALS research.
Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Medical School have discovered a new gene that's responsible for the disease.
Genetic testing in over 1,000 ALS families showed 3 percent of patients had a variation of the gene that supplies neurons and repairs DNA.
Experts say that le the Internet sensation may have seemed silly at the time, it raised more than $220 million in eight weeks.

They should've done a Harlem Shake challenge too.

That seems statistically negligible

While it's good that they found a cause, how much does this help in terms of finding a cure? Sounds like this is a case of getting a bad draw from the genetic deck.

Finding out how things are caused can lead to more info that help reduce instances of it.
Like HIV in Baton Rouge.

Maybe I'm missing something but what about the other 97%?

If the variation is in 0.0001% of people without ALS, then it is very significant.
If they can figure out how to potentially cure 1/33 ALS patients, it's a big deal.

I don't understand the breakthrough. What's the gist?
What % of the non-ALS population have the gene also?

You're not missing anything. They don't have the variant.

So, Kige Ramsey cured ALS....I can't wait for the TIME magazine photoshoot...Or better yet: PLAYGIRL photoshoot

I was sitting here thinking this very thing and laughing my arse off...I may just have to search that up and watch it again...

Well the 3% could lead to something. No clue what exactly but it's something new they have found and anything to create new thought and research is always good. This continues the process to eliminate it all together

Nothing in that article showed that the ice bucket money led to this discovery, and there is little to support that this one discovery has furthered the search for improved treatment or a cure. Just typical bullshite from a random internet post. Also, not even a link to a study in the article.

You only treated the symptoms of ALS to help them become less symptomatic with less morbidity.
Things like this start the wheel rolling on actual developmental breakthroughs in terms of treatment say 5-10-20 years down the line that can actually help that 1/33 patient.
IIRC, there were something like 30,000 people with ALS, you could potentially cure 1000 in 20 years (more than like the 30k currently will not live that long, but the incidence rate is like +5k year and death is roughly the same per year). That's not including other potential breakthroughs you find in the next decade or two as well. It isn't big in terms of numbers alone, but things like this can cause a ripple effect in treatment.
