The next house i build will be my dream home. It will have a commode in the living room and TVs in the bathrooms.

From my experiences in South La w/hurricanes I'd say a built-in generator that powers the entire house in the event of an outage.

Wiring for internet is about 5 years outdated. Wireless is what most people use/need.

Agreed about fixed stairs to attic. This was a must when working with our architect. We are building a house now, this was on our no compromise list:
1) fixed stairs to attic otherwise my husband will be the only one ever storing things
2) a butler's pantry that has massive storage (in addition to a pantry) and a full length prep counter/sink/extra dishwasher. The mess can be kept in here instead of in kitchen while entertaining. Also has an entrance door from both kitchen and dining room.
3) huge kitchens with a great keeping area. this is where life is lived with families
4) a playroom connected to the "living" side of the house. Can evolve into homework room/music room/whatever down the road. Want to keep everyone in the same vicinity of the house.
5) surround sound throughout
6) laundry room(s) in close proximity to bedrooms. It just makes sense
7) true mud areas with generous storage cabinets
8) zero carpet
This is based on a family with kids, I doubt a retired couple might want everything I've listed

I don't even do the laundry, and I know the benefit in this. If you have a 2 story and are worried about flooding, just add a room drain in the middle of the laundry room.

Every house I've ever lived in always had them closer to the kitchen, which makes no sense. And if you have a huge house with a few bedrooms on each floor? Place a laundry room on each level.
