1400 dollar water bill: Anybody ever dealt with JP water department?

For reference, fiance and I live by ourselves. Water bill has never been more than 150, get a call today saying we used 89K gallons over the span of 2 months. They installed these new “smart meters” on my block this month as well.
Any advice on how to go about fighting a 1400 dollar water bill?

You never said whether or not you actually used that much water

That is about 1 gallon a minute - all day, every day for two months.

No worries
Happens everytime a water district updates the meters
The installers failed to record the old meter data and report to billing that a new meter was installed at your address
I live in the infamous Ward 2 Water district in Livingston Parish where we have to take a pic of our water meter every week if we expect to have an accurate monthly invoice.
My monthly bill for years has been 54 bucks but after the new meter was installed it was 700. A quick search of my billing history and verification of the newly installed meter corrected the issue

Saw this happen to someone else just a week or so ago. JP is refusing to adjust it. Complete B/S imo.

Curious question. Is this your first bill with the smart meter? What was the final reading on your last water bill with the old meter, and what is the official reading on your current water bill?
If those numbers are ~89k gallons, I'd start with requesting the reading's recorded at the time of installation. I wonder if they are starting off with an incorrect number and just saying F it, not my problem

I had a similar water leak. Had it repaired and went to the local city water board office and asked if I could have sewerage bill reduced. They did it.

Sounds like NOSWB is handing out lessons.

I don't have a bill like that.. Damn I would be pissed.. For years my bill was around $52 every 2 months.. In the last 6 years or so it has steadily gone up.. There was a new garbage collection contract in those years.. My last bill was $98 for the same usage. But you are not the only one that is getting false bills.. I see it on the neighborhood facebook page a lot. They are calling out the councilman, who is on the page, and he responds with "I'll look into it". I think the parish went with an outside billing company. It seems to take hours to get them on the phone for them to tell you have a water leak and you need to get a plumber. So you pay a plumber just to tell you that there is no leak.
I will add if you don't have a smart meter you can be screwed.. They don't read the analog meters every billing cycle.. They read them about every 8-10 months.. So if you have a leak that you didn't know about for 8-10 months it would reflect on your bill...

Try with the water department first. If they don’t assist or if you don’t get a response, go straight to your JP council person.

So. You can but you can't. A local business just paid the water bill of a senior for $3k that sat at home for 3 months with no water (flavors snowballs paid bill) . No leaks found.
3k in bills in two months and water cut off with an open appeal. JP water is averting is with those smart meters. I thought things would get better. But no everyone paying more and some bring charged thousands. And the process to fight it is so long you'll get your water cut off for not paying.
