I remember reading a story about this subject about 20 years ago in a science magazine.
One thing that the scientists pointed out, was that no elephant cow would be able to carry a full size mammoth baby to term.
They had found the bones of mammoths on some isolated island off the coast of California that were dwarf mammoths, and if they could extract useable DNA from one of those, they might be able to do it.

It can never be done. They will create an elephant with some similar DNA structure to a mammoth but they will never have a full blood mammoth.

Waste of money

Suddenly that repeating nightmare of being chased by a T. rex near a skyscraper is starting to make sense.

They I have obviously never seen a single science fiction movie ever

I’m all for it. If they put in a zoo or wherever, can you imagine how many people would want to see it! It would be a huge technological achievement, plus it’s pretty cool!

This theory has changed. Wooly mammoths were about the same size as African elephants, so it shouldn’t be an issue. The Colombian mammoth was significantly larger, cloning that one probably wouldn’t work.

Regarding the comment about not being a true mammoth, while factually true, because of gene splicing etc, the calf would be well over 90% mammoth, and through breeding programs that number could be improved upon.

Yeah, haven't kept up with it much. I just remember reading that article way back when, because I thought it was interesting.
Have to admit, I would pay money to see a wooly mammoth, as long as there is a hell of a fence between us.
