Sure, and the lack of financial acumen and paycheck to paycheck lifestyle will lead those couples to suggest they're "lower middle class."
They're not lower middle class, they're idiots.

Our house cost about 1.2x our annual income. I always found it crazy that people making 80k are living in 225k homes

Those low housing costs in the south must be nice. I'm rocking about 2.7x on the west coast

and like I said, my daughter is in daycare and has been since she was 2, and she has thrived in daycare
but I also feel like she may be more advanced in some things with more one on one learning
For instance, I want my kids in daycare for purely the social interaction of other individuals not named mom or dad.
With my engineering background I feel like I should be able to teach them anything math and critical thinking skill related. That can be taken care of when I get home from the office.

I have very low expectations out of our child care provider. All of the parenting/education is done when they're with us. I'm sure I could spend another $750 per kid and find a daycare that teaches Latin, and bravo if that's your choice, but it isn't a big deal to us.
To each his own...
I can't fathom knowing my most precious assets are trusted to a minimum wage/warm body employee. Then again I know firsthand the type of people those types of daycare hire.
Again whatever works

I guess it's just more of a comment on people overextending their finances in general. We pay for private schools but we also make pretty decent money. I've been trying to convince the wife to move out of BR but so far she's not budging.

Aren't most daycare providers not really killing it? From what I've seen in cursory observations, even the workers at the nice daycare center aren't making a lot.
Which makes sense since daycare provider is a very low skill job.

225k is nothing for a home and easily affordable on 80k if you save up for a nice down-payment, have no kids, and property taxes aren’t outrageous. Rent is more than mortgages in a lot of cities as well, so you actually save on your monthly bills.
You want someone with 80k to buy a sub-100k house? Because that would be what we call a “trailer”.

If you purchased them both new, you're probably close. My point is that your vehicles shouldn't be "worth" half of your home. Why would you put so much of your income into depreciating assets, rather than your home (which is typically an appreciating asset)?

Our first house cost $118k. We just had twins and the wife took a year off of work. It wasn't a trailer but definitely a starter home in the country.

What city can you buy a $118k house that is in a safe area?

True. However, if your wife is a nurse or in a profession that brings home a salary of 65k or above, she needs to be working. However, that is a personal preference. Not the rule.
I don't know how much child care is, but if someone is making 60k and pushes your household into the next bracket and not including hcild care cost, is it worth it?

We lived out near Walker at the time. Granted this was 2006 when I bought that house.

Baw, I'll be living in the 28% bracket for a good part of my life lol. Unless I move into Technical management, it really won't matter unless Ms. 50 is pulling the same grip I am.

A lot of cities actually. This is possible in many states like Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Arizona, Texas, Tennessee, just to name a few.

You do know that the tax system is a progressive tax system right? "Pushing yourself into another tax bracket" is never a reason not to take the extra money....ever.
Or am I reading this wrong?
