Well in 2017, if you want to live anywhere close to a decent city at all, 100k buys you a trailer in an absolute shite neighborhood.
Hell, in Nashville, our "starter" home is a townhome in a gentrifying area (aka the hood), is 1,500 sq ft and was still closer to 300 than 200.

In today's world, if you are a successful man, your goal needs to be to find a woman who is also successful. It will completely change the financial dynamics in your marriage/family.
New wife and I are both 28. Both make about the same (we go back and forth depending on who got a raise last). We're at about a combined $190k/yr. That's decent (not great) money in Atlanta or Nashville, but it's good money in Chattanooga. I have friends with good jobs and wives who do nothing. They're pulling $80k/year with a kid trying to figure out how to make ends meet. It changes everything when you have a wife who makes money (and is hot).

At this point, I'd be interested in seeing an income tax system like that, just to see the total disincentive to higher pay in action.

Shortly before the various government bailouts of 2008/09, a few of my close friends were discussing the 100k milestone with each of us working in different industries. We all had about 10 years of working experience at the time.
Within a year or so after the bailouts, it seemed like everyone's annual salaries had gone way up for different reasons (unrelated). Everyone always comments on how our government is just 'printing more money' whenever they need it. How much of an impact has this had over the past 10 years with increases in average annual income?

I was surprised to find that Chattanooga was so dangerous. I mean, probably no more than BR but I saw it on a top 10 most dangerous cities under 200k recently. I've only visited a few times and must have been in a decent area.

We are in almost exactly the same boat. Main difference is that we are expecting a kid in roughly 3 weeks. That DINK money was great while it lasted. I guess we will only take 3 vacations a year now instead of 5-6. Thankfully Chattanooga is relatively low cost of living

I almost thought 5/6 sounded silly but if you count flying out of town for weddings as "vacations" it is actually right on the nose. Some day those damn weddings will stop and they'll be actual vacations...some day.

Ambition matters to me. I don't think I could marry someone with no ambition. It was definitely part of my criteria before I started dating my wife.

It's not a dangerous city at all. They had a spike of gang crime that started like 3 years ago but it's been limited to an area that's like 4 square miles. It's a small area away from the main population centers and white people just avoid it. Those areas are being gentrified like crazy now.
You could come to Chattanooga and drive around all day looking for a part of town that makes you feel uncomfortable and not find it.

Perhaps I should have said trips instead of vacations. Only 2 of those trips are 6+ day "vacations". Most of them are just long weekends.

Ex-fiance was a total "idk what to do with my life" kind of woman and I thought that with me pushing through college it would some how rub off on her (twhs) and it didnt. We moved to DFW and immediately started having issues. That ended with the quickness. Also made me realize that the quickest turn off for me is someone with a lack of direction. It just sucks that I wasted a lot of time on the wrong woman.
