If *they* aren't counting that new plumber or a day laborer, it's only fair not to count the bottom of the professional/office job world.

True. However, if your wife is a nurse or in a profession that brings home a salary of 65k or above, she needs to be working. However, that is a personal preference. Not the rule.

my initial comment was for 50_tiger, who claims to make $100k
if one parent is already making $100k, I don't see the reason for another working for $12/year
if the $1k/month is a make or break thing, that is a different scenario

My ex room mate was HVAC guy. Made around 40 an hour. This is in Texas though. Everybody pays a kings ransom for AC.

My father was in the Gulf for half of my life. My mom worked. Me and my twin brother were sent to daycare.
I am an Engineer. He is the Store Manager of one of the Wal-Mart's in Thibodeaux.
I say we turned out pretty damn good.

I pay $225/week for 3 kids in daycare. I know that is on the lower end, but it is also a pretty barebones daycare operation. We just need someone to keep them alive for 8ish hours per day, so it works for us.
In Louisiana, the average child care costs for a 4-year old are $400/month. In Texas, it is $550/month.
This all goes back too the discussion of necessary spending vs discretionary spending.

You can live very comfortably on 100k in most places where keeping up with the status quo is not high on one's agenda.
