The much greater affect on the "value" of $100,000 today compared to the 80's is the horrible lack of plentiful opportunities to prosper. In the 70's and 80's it wasn't hard to for a young man to increase his capital exponentially in a reasonable amount of time. I feel sorry for my kids and the odds that are now stacked against all younger "investors" or just those with the desire to achieve financially to insure their future. We could talk for hours on the examples but one that is pretty obvious is real estate.
It was almost certain for anyone who could save (or borrow) $15,000 to $30,000 to be able to triple that within 8-10 years... with a little luck and insight, double or even triple that again in the same time frame. In older S.B.R. areas that are now untouchable for anyone starting out, it was easy for anybody buy an older home not yet renovated, in disrepair, etc. in the $29k - $40k range. I was as naïve, inexperienced, and construction-ignorant as they come... I lived w/o hot water and even electricity for months at a time but my "foolishness" was protected by the massive growth that occurred. The properties I was able to stumble my way into all turned into $200k+ houses... mostly by virtue of "location" alone. This is one of many ways we could get ahead that just don't exist today. Of course there are new opportunities but I could name many more examples but truth is today's young have very long odds to overcome before experiencing the "American Dream".

Ya, samesies.
For the first 2 years the kid is a lap child so costs should be about the same on that front.
But it is probably every thing else that is gonna get ya.

We're both pretty hardcore on the no-baby train, my wife even more so than I am. If I'm not going to have a son, I'm going to fill that empty space with fast cars and nice things. All of my friends have pregnant wives and are figuring out how to start saving for school, daycare and buying baby stuff. I spent this weekend in Nashville test driving an AMG coupe. I like this life better for now

This will probably change when the bio-clock starts ticking and the idea of "never having kids" starts being more real. You will have to outlast her biology or she'll fight it off.
But it is definitely a good thing for now. I'm trying to eek out a few more years but my wife is pushing for next year when she's 31 with 35 being about our cutoff. I'd like to push it as close to then as I can but I think I'm losing right now.

We aren't gonna really let the baby slow us down. He is gonna be here in a few weeks and we are already planning a long weekend to Washington DC over veterans day. Just gonna throw his arse in a baby Bjorn and go sight seeing.
