Generally, it is some consequence or series of them which finally pushes someone to arrive at a difficult conclusion that change is necessary.

How did you determine you were an alcoholic?

A pattern of continued and often escalating use - often in spite of warning situations and problems that surround the use. It really depends on the individual.

Your powerless nature at bars is a significant concern as is your frequency of use.
OTOH, your ability to stay within limits is an encouraging item - if you are not minimizing.

Everything you said rings true to me, have been sober 7 months 18days today, for me and I’m only speaking for myself , AA and the tools it provides has been extremely helpful…I’m utilizing my sponsor and working the 12 steps which really opened my eyes to who I truly am… For me it really is one day at a time and an hour at a time when I get out of my lane, thank you for sharing!!

I did a year sober a few months ago (11/21-1/23) just to reset (and the wife had her opinions). I decided to have a few to see where I was at and now I feel like I have to be sober forever. I get ahold of this crap and I don’t stop. I guess I was just wired that way. Oh well, I did it before, I’ll do it again. Hangover ain’t worth it.

Congrats on your year! It’s not as easy as people think it is.

Haven't drank since August 2022. It was tough at first remembering how to have fun sober. Not a big deal now but still want a beer every now and then.

Don't miss the hangovers

Good for you! We all have to take things one day at a time. Easier said than done but true none the less.

I’ve used the 12 step some in this journey. I’ve been to treatment twice. But this time I guess I really saw the damaging I was causing to ME. Nobody told me to quit but I realized I was destroying everyone I loved. In November 2021 I was a 106 lb skeleton. Made my mind up to quit and now weigh 198lbs. Never felt better even with those 19 surgeries . But yes I do have a very powerful and close support around me. Thanks LITH….

We may give you shite because your sports picks are just so unlucky, but I for one am glad you've done self improvement and proud of you. shite is hard.

Friendly advice: I wouldn't touch that shite, even from the most "reputable" legal seller. It's really nasty and almost all the companies are marginal to begin with.

May 16 will be 8 years for me. I was 43.
My drinking was self medication for all the bad stuff that happened to me as a child. Drinking away the pain just created more pain. I still battle depression but I do it sober. It still sucks but reading scripture and prayer gets me through.

Yeah the downs in life arent nearly as much of a problem without added anxiety and xtra depression Alcohol adds to it all.
Things I used to let bother me I just don't have time for.
Its like everything around me has slowed down for me to process and make sense of it without the worry. Its nice.

Gave it up for Lent. N/A beer has been a way to curb the craving. A six pack will last a week.

I was consuming a few beers and nearly a bottle of wine per night.

I’m contemplating Easter at this point. The money savings are nice. Weekend afternoons are a bitch though.

God bless you, I’m glad you took the upper hand in this fight. Hopefully one day I can start a thread for 30 days, much less a year.
