My wife opened Apple weather on her phone earlier and said yup it says we got 12” of snow already. I looked outside at the 4-6” of sleet on the ground and figured no use trying to explain this to a woman.

I try explaining this to my wife and often coworkers all the time. Especially the ones that look at the weather channel app or the basic iPhone weather app and swear by the hourly predictions. "It says rain is gonna stop right at 9am, then we get more rain at 11 and it stops again at 3"

Those hourly predictions and totals are generated by computers and very, very wrong. Look at what my basic weather app says for our snowfall total in LR right now:

Record breaking snowfall! Almost 3 feet!

41° now with the heaviest rain we've had all day. Really glad the temp has gone up through the night. It was 30° around sunset.

ETA: Make that 43°.

What’s the warm nose?? Thanks for any simple explanation!

Warm air aloft that is below the freezing layer in the atmosphere. It causes snow that forms at higher levels to melt when it passes through and become rain. If the temperature at the surface is below freezing that rain refreezes when it hits the surface.

Imagine the different layers of the atmosphere and their temperatures expressed on a vertical graph.

Uppermost layer is below 32, generating snow when moisture is in the mix

Next layer is also below 32, still snow

Next layer is 34, melting the snow into liquid

If the lowest layer is 33 or above, you have rain. 32ish or close to that, sleet as the liquid rain refreezes into pellets as it falls. If it's not cold enough to immediately freeze but the ground temps are below freezing, that rain falls and freezes on impact = freezing rain.

On a vertical temp graph that warmer layer looks like a "nose" sticking out

Thanks! A person can learn so much here.

ETA: Oxford MS and surrounding areas without power in many areas. Transformers popping per fb reports.

Glad my girl is home in south Louisiana for now. She was ready but opted last minute to make the drive.

I don't understand. Why would she wake you up? Are you a lineman for the light company?
