shite has pretty much hit the fan in Tennsippibama, we somehow still have power (it's flickering a lot) but a bunch of folks around us don't and it's a matter of time. Tree went down out in front of my
House. Can hear them going down in every direction, some
Sound like bombs going off. Maybe we can make it til morning without losing power I'm gonna try to get some sleep finally

I just checked Austin Energy and we are doing awesome all things considered. Just one outage with 5 affected customers. A friend in North Austin had a truck take out a power pole earlier today and they had it back on within the hour. They're doing their best to keep things moving. The last minute shift to sleet from freezing rain helped us out a ton.
Sleet/freezing rain has stopped for now but we have another wave starting in 30ish minutes.
Anybody have an update on Shreveport? Haven't heard from family up there since about 8 (assume they're sleeping) and they had power last I spoke with them. Parents have a whole home generator but brother and SIL don't.

North Alabama. I usually say it, but forget sometimes.
The extreme northwestern counties of AL have been the ones dealing with the freezing rain, though even they have crept above freezing tonight.

Nothing at all sticking to the trees here in central Arkansas, but even if there was I live in a city that has 100% underground utilities. I don't understand why everyone hasn't converted to underground power by 2026, it's just as cost effective as above ground power lines and poles.
The only potential weak points are the junction boxes above ground at major intersections that can get struck by lightning or hit by an out of control car, and problems are harder to fix because they have to be dug up. But I can't comprehend why there's still any above ground power in the south with thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornados, ice storms, etc.

My neighborhood is below ground but the transmission line runs through a heavily wooded urban park which has been the main problem area. If the line goes down back there you're hiking a crew in and out.

I see we're watching the same thing. The wild thing out of al of this is that a town in New Mexico got the most snow from this thing so far.

retrofitting an existing city from above to underground is incredibly expensive.

Getting a pretty serious sleet downfall right now, sounds like hail on the windows and is punching a billion small holes in the snow/sleet on the ground as it falls. Went outside for a couple minutes and was pelted but came in dry as a bone
This has been the weirdest snow/ice storm in my lifetime

. If it's not cold enough to immediately freeze but the ground temps are below freezing, that rain falls and freezes on impact = freezing rain.
I would think 22 is cold enough to immediately freeze.
Must be a thin freezing temp layer at the surface

It's freezing rain in the burbs east of ATL right now. My porch and cars are already slicked with ice. Grayson GA area. Not good.
