With hindsight, it was obvious Payton wanted out of here at the 2020 Draft

The 2020 NFL draft for the Saints was a fail. Ruiz, a very slow start and not extended. Baun is a special teamer and out of position. Trautman is gone and was a whiff. Tommy Stevens...LOL

Payton was visibly frustrated during that draft because of the Covid restrictions and also having cameras in his face at his home. So what does he do? He trades away all the Day 3 picks to end the draft early.

quote:

Minnesota traded a third-round selection (105th) to New Orleans in exchange for fourth-, fifth-, sixth-, and seventh-round selections (130th, 169th, 203rd, and 244th).

But wait, he has a chance to troll his former staff member Joe Brady, so he trades away a future pick just to block Brady from getting Stevens.

At the time, no one saw it, but it's so clear Payton was circling the drain and burned out from the situation he created.

And again, at the time I'm thinking we have a solid roster and therefore don't need all these Day 3 players, but now it's affected team depth.

He bailed after the no call

He knew he was involved with a team that can get screwed and only the fans are mad.

Mind you I'm nowhere near as smart as the guys taking these players, but I still never understood the Baun thing. I remember how excited this board was to add a pass rusher of his caliber, then they threw him at standup linebacker and never had him rush the passer.

And he has gone down to 225lbs.
What position is that?

Strong Safety?

I know it was the 7th round or whatever, but this is the worst draft pick in team history.

Stevens was a bum in college and had NO SHOT at making any NFL team roster, EVER.

He intentionally drafted shitty players so that it would be one less competitive team he would have to face with his eventual new team. #4Dchess

Then we cut him and he ended up with the Panthers shortly after anyway

Him and his Squeeze desperately wanted out of the "Realm of Latoya the Destroya."

You fake like you don't want to coach any longer, stay out a year, then get another millionaire NFL HC gig in a much more progressive and evolved city.

Not a bad line of reasoning and a smart move.......

He’d been looking to leave as far back as 2015

Yea because nothing looks better on a resume then I hated my last employer so I packed it in and made sure to screw them walking out the door.

Oh, btw, I hate cameras on me and the attention of the media so I want to be a head coach of your NFL team.

LAWD you guy crack me up......

It was well known and reported how much he hated the cameras in his home during the draft and traded up to end it early so they would leave.

I understand the frustrations of that pick, but you really need to look at the Mecom-era drafts before making this asinine statement.

They drafted a punter in the first round one year. They had the #1 overall pick their first year and traded it away for absolutely nothing when they could have had Bob Griese, Floyd Little, Alan Page, or Gene Upshaw, or even Bubba Smith.

A throwaway 7th rounder pales in comparison to 18 years of garbage drafting, or at least until Bum showed up and did a little better.

A 3-7 pick can never be a "worst pick ever".
Unless your team never made a bad pick in round 1-2.

I always said that about Bum.. He was okay as a coach.. Even with the early afternoon beer fest during training camps.. Bum had an eye for talent...

Payton with trading future pick(s) for Stevens really pissed me off.. Stevens was cut and the Panthers signed him anyway.. Payton could be known for some stupid hard headed crap...

I said it a few times in the threads that year, Baun was a good prospect that fell. But he’s kinda like Nolan Smith this year, he doesn’t fit our defense. He always looked like a 3-4 outside backer to me.

Haven’t been a fan long huh?

How about the year we could have paired Ricky Jackson with one of if not the best defensive players ever in LT? To pick a running back. Yea saints did that.
