I like Williams and I think he’s one of the most underrated players on our team but I just don’t know if we can afford him. The way I see it you have to give contracts similar to these:
Kamara: 4 years $44 million
D Davis: 3 years $30 million
Ramcyzk: 4 years $68 million
Lattimore: 4 years $64 million
I’m just not sure how we can afford Williams, especially if he expects to be paid with likes of Mathieu or Earl Thomas. If he would take a 4 year $32 million type deal we should do it but we can’t pay $13-14 million per.

Let him walk. He is a liability in run support and will want a bunch of money.

Good safeties haven't been breaking the bank lately. I'd like to keep him. We'll need a new "SS" soon as Jenkins only has a year or two of high level play left in him, and best not to have a revolving door at both safety positions over a 3 year period.

I’m fine with it. If the MM never happens this isn’t really a question

CJGJ will occupy one safety slot if Jenkins or Williams leaves but if they knew they couldn’t pay Williams would be wise to try to get a draft pick for him in trade? Personally I think this is one where we know we are going to lose him after the season and get nothing for him in return but his value to the defense this year is too great to move him so you just play him and and take your loss after the season. Jacoby Stevens and Caden Sterns from Texas will be in the draft so we should be able to find a replacement.

I blame coaching for that more than anything. We should’ve grabbed and held their receivers at the los and took a 5 yard penalty. Would have run enough time off the clock. Do it once or twice and then only play they have is a Hail Mary.

He’s been solid and think we didn’t pay Bell so we could keep him. And that’s the correct decision.

Jenkins pretty much is the fall back option at FS if Williams asks for too much. He'll move to FS and CJ to "full time" SS (unless we sign/draft someone else).

I think he’s the most overrated player on our roster. He obviously makes horrible decisions when the ball is in the air and is not great in run support. Yes he shows flashes from time to time, but he is not worth what you are going to have to pay him. Chauncey and Jenkins are 2021 safeties.

Box safeties don’t break the bank but coverage safeties typically get paid pretty well. Even if he is only projected to get like 8-10 a year then it is more then I would like to spend. I gave Marcus the benefit of the doubt for years and has played well in coverage most of the time but he has no desire to make a tackle. If you want proof go watch the AJ Brown td on the reverse against the titans.

Why pay game-changer money for a player who’s not a game changer?

The best way to describe Williams’ play is that he’s there and he’s good, I guess? I wouldn’t know because you rarely hear his name called in a game. That’s not really a sign of poor play for a defensive back, but it’s not like we have a five minute highlight reel of Marcus Williams plays, either.

Williams is still only 23. Think about how young he played his first three seasons and realize he grades out at 4th best at his position over that time. Same grade as Jamal Adams, Desmond King and Eddie Jackson from that class

Our fans are ridiculous.

I’d be fine either way honestly. I do find it funny how people think Williams is overrated. He’s actually pretty underrated. Yeah, the MM was awful and he isn’t the best tackler but he has phenomenal range and has been a very very good player for us. I hear more people bash him than they do praise him so I’m not sure how some of these clowns come up with some of this stuff. With that being said, I’d much rather try and replace him than lattimore, Ram, Kamara (another questionable one). I’m not sure how big of a contract Davis is gonna get considering his age so that could be a huge influence on resigning Williams. I prefer to keep Williams but he def is one of the players i could see us letting walk.

If this is true, then I will rethink how I feel about him. However, given the Saints other priorities, paying Williams might be lower than paying some other players on the roster.

I don’t see how you have the option not to pay him unless you want the back end to take a significant hit. He will end up having his best year this year and maybe then the saints won’t be able to afford him.

Good luck finding a five minute highlight reel of any 3-year coverage safety

PFF? Yeah, they graded Peat 69/80 eligible Guards and Saints decided to pay him over Warford who graded much higher - I don’t think the Saints are looking too much into those grades...

Who said the saints were looking at them?

How else do you want to quantify Williams’ play? Who has the most int+pd the last three seasons from the position?

He’s a good young safety. Who cares about run defense in a division with Evans/Godwin, Julio/Ridley, Moore/CMC/Anderson? People able to play the pass is paramount. We just let Bell walk for being run stopping safety and the market for him was meh. Ball skills is king. Lattimore and williams need to be retained in a passing league In a division with the best WR in the league

I agree with this. He is talented in coverage don’t get me wrong but I just don’t see him as a key piece that needs to be kept and it drives me crazy when I see him completely whiff on a tackle. I’m not just talking the MM. I gave him the benefit of the doubt of being a rookie there. Actually supported him as a rising star during that time but his tackling has become more of a concern as the years have gone by.
