It is not just about run defense. It is about tackling all together. If you play safety then you need to be able to tackle.

His missed tackle % is league average for the position at 14.5%
Being a playmaker and forcing turnovers trumps all. Williams has the most total INTs of any Saints player from 2010-2019 and he's only been here 3 seasons. No one cares about being a good tackler when you can turn the ball over and youre surrounded by "good tacklers"

You make good points and I wasn’t intentionally trying to take a dig at you. The PFF grading thing is just used inconsistently on this board. “Look how high” when in favor or “Payton and the FO know what they’re doing” when graded low. Doesn’t bother me either way but I trust the staff over the PFF grades, especially after the last few years of overall good personnel moves.
The bottom line is money will be tight, and if Williams grades out as one of the better safeties than he will want to be paid accordingly. Depends on his price tag and budget as others have said...

We really wasn’t very good defensively for most of that time period so that isn’t saying a whole lot. I’m not doubting his skills in coverage though. Tackling is important as a safety and I don’t care what your percentages say. If you watch him, especially in the open field, he is really bad. He also has the anti clutch gene where he shites the bed in big moments. I think he is a good player with glaring weaknesses in his game. I wouldn’t pay him especially if he costs us one of our other key players.

This. He's a center fielder that they can sit back and reliably count on to force turnovers, he's not meant to be a run stopper.

This is stunning. I am not questioning you at all, but it just does not seem like Williams is anywhere near that class of player. Of course, I'm just watching games as a fan and not breaking down film.

Let’s not make him sound better than he is. In his three seasons, he has recorded 4 ints (2017), 2 ints (2018), and 4 ints (2019). He also recorded two forced fumbles over that time. This is decent but let’s not make him in to be some kind of playmaking machine. These are not elite ball hawk numbers for a centerfielder

He's also led the Saints defense in snaps over the last 3 seasons... 2,862 snaps. I know people want to harp on a play or two, but that's a lot of consistency over a huge sample size.

Not to mention he came out of Utah with the same skills and track record . It’s all on the tape

Yes without question provided the deal isn’t astronomical. The dude is still barely older than some rookies and has played very well for the most part. His role will only benefit from more and more experience.
Provided we’re not setting some league ceiling for safety salary I want his early prime years with us and not some other team after we’ve developed him and gone through the growing pains of his early 20s seasons.

I’m not denying that the guy is good in coverage most of the time. However he isn’t forcing that many turnovers.
There is also a lot of tape of him doing this. And no the link isn’t the MM. I’m over that.

He blew the niners game this year , which in hindsight was ended the saints chances.
He’s still young so there’s hope that he develops into a good player. But saying he is underrated is dumb.

Do you know what underrated or overrated for that matter even means? It’s in regards to common perception by a group of people. It’s not saying that calling someone underrated is saying they’re really good. Calling someone underrated just means that you don’t think they’re as bad as they are perceived to be.
He’s overrated by PFF but underrated by a lot of fans because in reality he’s not a trash safety (fans) but he’s also not great (PFF).
