re: Who is in favor of paying Marcus Williams?

All depends on what he commands. He does not deserve top 5 safety money. Regardless of what PFF says, his instincts are a bit lacking and show in the bad angles and late jumps he takes on deeper throws. I think he is still overthinking it sometimes. Overall, I think he is a good safety and deserves that type of money. However, I would not break the bank for him.

I mean if he was sacking the QB, making TFL and jarring balls loose he would be the best safety in the league. Of course he has deficiencies. You’ll be let down if you’re measuring a guy against perfection.
He’s played nearly 3k snaps on defense as a 21/22/23 year old... close your eyes and think about that. Wow, that sure is a lot of snaps and this guy is pretty young. And you can cherry pick a few bad plays? Let’s go big picture here

You def sign Marcus Williams, especially since Dennis Allen is the dc
He loves playing Williams as the only deep safety and he covers more ground than most realize
I wouldn't start over now with a new free safety
No one on the roster is going to cover the ground Williams does

I just feel like you can probably use your second round pick next year on a guy that can do the same thing that Marcus Williams is doing right now. If he will sign for around 6 million next year then great. If he wants much more than that then I’m not interested. He isn’t a game changer

"I know people want to harp on a play or two"
There is definitely that element to it, but for me, it's more that I just don't see Williams as much of a playmaker. I would expect someone with that high of a grade to "show out" a little more. Anyway, thanks for the good post and info.

He’s got 10 interceptions since 2017 which is 5th most in the league

Where are you getting this from?

Remember he came into the league pretty light at 202 lbs, lighter than 75% of safeties drafted into the league since 2000. He’s gonna be lighter than most guys charging downfield with the ball. He’s more finesse but he’s not a finished product
I think we want to be around when the elite athleticism and the elite ball skills combine with a few other little things that’ll make Williams one of the best

I mean he is 15th on that list but I get you are saying that he is 5th as a safety. I’m still not crazy about resigning him to big money

No, he’s tied for 5th most. Including CBs
Posted on 5/15/20 at 7:57 pm to GynoSandberg
No that is not what that link says. He is tied for 10th.
Slots 10 - 15 have 10 ints if you are counting all dbs.

Let him walk. He is good safety but in crunch time he sucks and there is no fixing that. He us either getting paid under the table to make bad plays or he sucks when it counts but he is a detrimental to the team.

Nine players have more interceptions, but the 10 interceptions is the fifth highest total of in the league.
(INTs- # of players)
17- 1
13- 2
12- 3
11- 3
10- 6
But over three seasons, 10 interceptions is the fifth most. Isolate the number of interceptions, it’s 17, 13, 12, 11 and then 10. No matter how many people are grouped in each, 10 is still the fifth highest amount across the board.

Also, Kevin Byard, who leads with 17 interceptions, had 8 in his second season. He was 24.
Marcus Williams will just be turning 24 on Sept. 8. This will be his fourth season. Just to show how young of a player he has been.

The link doesn’t says tied for 5th most INTs?
One guy has 17
Two have 13
Three have 12
Three have 11
Williams and five others have 10
He’s tied for 5th most
You’re telling me he’s not?
