Is he still living off that 2017 draft?

This is an extremely important draft for the Saints imo. They need to hit on a majority of their picks if they ever want to get out of cap hell.

I'm high on Breese and miller from last yrs draft. Howden got plenty snaps and looked like he could become above average.

At perry will probably always be that 4th receiver type that can go up and get the ball.

He is an asset to the team... You can't hit on all the picks.. Look at the 2014 draft... Wasn't Brandon Cooks the only one on the team at the start of the 2015 season?

2016 & 2017 are all time legendary drafts.
2018 is pretty much a flop. Some potential, but not much production.
2019 is a good draft. It’s too bad we couldn’t keep CJGJ and Ellis, but McCoy is a good starter.
2020 was Covid, so no combine or interviews like normal. Ruiz has become serviceable. Baun is just misused.
For 2021, Turner is a bust. But Werner and Adebo are good starters. Young is a good backup considering he was a 6th round pick.
2022 is kinda hit and miss. Olave and Taylor are really good. But Penning has been terrible. And Jackson has been MIA.
Too early to tell on 2023, but Bresee looks really really good while Howden, Saldiveri, Perry and Miller have contributed and look promising. Foskey is MIA so far.

I came into this thread thinking his drafts have fallen off a lot. Turner, Penning and Davenport are disappointments considering how high they were drafted. But overall, he’s done really good. But this is really a make or break draft as we need to hit and hit big this year.

He’s drafted very well on the defensive side of the ball minus 1st round DE projects.

things drastically improved in our drafts ever since he came here.

maybe they need to move on from him, but i dont see why, and i cant trust what the FO thinks is correct

I wonder if Jeff Ireland agrees with the Saints always trading away pics to move up? Is that a Loomis thing alone, or is that an Ireland recommendation?

People who criticize Ireland expect every draft pick to hit, which literally does not happen anywhere or on any team. We've had some bad drafts, but pretty much any analysis out there you can find shows we are a top 5-7 drafting team since Ireland got here. All things considered, even with a few bad years, I'll take it. The chances of getting better in this area if we flip the scouting department are very low.

That’s being kind…..he’s still pretty terrible for a 1st rd pick with this many snaps. I still don’t like the extension they gave him, but hopefully it works out

This is an important question. Also not only does he agree with all the trade ups, but does he agree with trading up 2 weeks before the draft even happens? That’s still the dumbest shite this FO has ever pulled off, and they have a long list of dumb shite.

I think Irelands drafting problem isn’t even an Ireland problem

If the team says we are drafting to support Carr which after an adjustment to his contract will be implied…it’s not Irelands fault for not drafting a QB…and trying to draft what fits his needs

We don’t know what Irelands stances on Davenport or Turner were…they fit the team profile of what we want for DE…that’s it in terms of what we know

I’m not giving him a full pass but if Sean or Mickey, or even DA based on the autonomy given to him call shots and want something it’s your job to give the, what you think is the best option. Your kind of pinned into a corner

This board thinks too highly of Werner. Serviceable at best

Don’t mention his name remember this is all Pete and Allens fault . Players and contracts situation have nothing to do with it! Remember players make coaches .

This is a great breakdown, but to be a truly fair analysis you would also need to compare his drafts to other teams drafts in that same year. I don't recall which draft it was, but there was 1 in the last 20 years where damn near every 1st rounder was either out of the league or a backup within 5 years.

I came into this thread with the opinion that Ireland is still a valued asset to the team and appears to hit on a lot more than he misses. With that said, the team still reaches on too many players; but we don't know if that's Ireland doing, Mickey, or Sean/DA

This will never make sense. If you are trying to get the #1 spot because you know you are drafting a certain player; sure by all means. But to do it so you can draft outside of the top 10 is one of the most illogical moves because you have no idea who will be there when it's time to draft.

Really interesting question.

I would hope that there was some consensus, it must be nice to have so much job security there as opposed to the majority of the rest of the NFL (where ownership expects results and is actually trying to win).
