We really didn’t improve during the free agency period

We resigned Jameis which gives us what we had last year.

We lost Williams and signed a solid safety from the Jets with an injury and DWI issue.

We have yet to sign a receiver and this really needs to be a priority.

We let Armstead walk, and we chose to do that since we had the cap space.

Draft is almost a month away and we have as many holes as we did before free agency began.

Classic Zombie offseason thread.

But you’re not wrong

Could be keeping cap space/options open for post-draft and/or training camp cuts.

Not many FA’s out there that will move the needle at this point

We got so crushed by injuries that no one really knows exactly how good we were last year. So yeah you’re not wrong but it may not matter as much as we fear

We got slightly worse but did so in clearing a lot of cap burden.

So far I would give us a B.

Could be an A with a WR signing.

Loomis himself said they'd be waiting for the first few waves to go by.

We will be K mart shopping and they've said as much

"Our philosophy is going to be, we're looking for value in free agency," he said. "We're going to be looking for a value player or two in that middle-market, low-market range."

This has been a very not ideal offseason. Factor in CSP as well.

The team has started playing the compensatory pick game, and I for one love it. The most successful teams over the last 10-15 years are very rarely the biggest free agency spenders and usually replace their overpriced talent through the draft

I think a good draft can turn it around. But a bad one could start a downhill slide for the future.

I’m thinking maybe some late round trades for veteran players a la 2006

the patriots went to a dozen SB in the last 15 years doing it so im glad we are finally not being stupid and not shooting ourselves in the foot by not doing the same.

now if they trade their 1st and 2nd picks this year to turn them into multiple 3rd and 4ths. and with some teams like houston having a dozen picks its easy to do if you are willing. we could very easily fix all of our needs but QB in this draft

there isnt much to get in the first 2 rounds that you cant find comparable talent wise in rounds 3-4

Free agency period has a long way to go. saints plan has always been about the 2nd waive players

Look for some moves this week. A WR maybe.

If the teams that have improved are teams like

Miami who just shipped out a 1st rounder, a 2nd rounder, plus are now paying a WR 30 million a year

Cleveland who in the past season has now lost Odell, Jarvis, Hooper, traded 3 1sts, and guaranteed a guy who didn't play last season at all 230 million guaranteed

I think we should rejoice the Saints are being reserved and calculated because some of these moves can cripple a franchise

All true. And, losing Armstead makes us significantly worse. We just forget because he's been out.

If I'm not mistaken, players traded for don't count towards the compensatory formula, only free agents. Which means you can pick up a quality player for a fifth rounder, and replace it the next year with comp pick that's better. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong

I don't think we're done, and I'm really excited about 4 top 100 picks.

It almost sounds a bit doom and gloom, but it's not as bad as face value would suggest.

Jamies comes back, he was doing good, another year in the system he should be even better. Keeping a QB with good potential to this contract is great value, especially when he had a 14TD/3INT ratio last season

Swapped M.Williams for M.Maye, I don't think it'll be much of a drop off, plus we saved money

Losing T.Armstead, does suck, but we typically play a handful of games without him each year. Hurst filled in for him nicely without much of a notable drop off, but we do still need another Hurst like signing for the swing T
role. We saved money

All 3 of those moves saved us money, resulting in the loss of only 1 key player, but none have necessarily resulted in leaving us with a "hole". Couple that with the fact that we restructured to get roughly $29M under cap, then I think that suggests that we will indeed bring a few guys to set us up nicely for best player available in the draft.

Your last sentence is my goal - I want the draft to be icing on top, not having to fill holes. I would love to address tackle and wr in FA
