But if Jimmy G can get there so can Winston. It’s just not a great QB year; Pickett and Corral have concerns and Willis has bust written all over him.

We will have to give up more to move up to get a QB so it will be essentially three drafts for 1 mediocre QB prospect.

Do you honestly think we’re going to the Super Bowl with Jameis? We might be a good team, but not a championship team. He’s never won anything meaningful in the NFL, even with all the weapons Tampa Bay gave him.

Idk, Jamies (and the Saints) was playing pretty damn well until he got hurt

Jameis also didn’t have Michael Thomas and an offense that had inconsistencies because of injuries. Draft help and Winston can get us to the playoffs.

On top of that, Jameis had an OL that was a M.A.S.H. unit.

Give Jameis another OT, OL health, a 2nd WR, and 100% of the time (no more idiotic splits with the terrible Taysom Hill) and he can probably do better.

We were literally a c-hair away from the playoffs after multiple games started by Taysom Hill and Trevor Semien, without Thomas and a rotating OL. I don't get why people think we were some shitty team with Jameis.

Also, as was pointed out earlier, saying that we're not a Super Bowl-winning team is kind of stupid because (1) Brees only even got there once; and (2) which of these rookie QBs seems likely to be a superstar-level QB who can get us over that jump in 2022?

I tend to agree, but my personal opinion is that you either have your franchise QB or are working to get in position to land one.

If the Saints really made this move to attempt to land two cost-controlled starters, then that’s putting a lot of faith in your scouting department. FWIW I do think they have that faith in Loomis/Ireland, but it’s a bit of an unusual move to make.

The same as you were with Taysom?

Payton had a great career here but is vastly over rated ad quaterback guru

False!
Even looking back to his days as an OC.
Kerry Collins was old and half drunk and went to the superbowl
Drew Brees of San Diego was not Drew Brees of New Orleans, too many people gloss over that and think that Drew was always HOF Drew that we saw in the black & gold. He was pretty average to above average in his days with the Chargers. Payton's system & scheming, along with Drew's work ethic and own improvements turned him in to one of the greatest of all time. If when he left San Diego someone would have told you that he would at one time own the NFL records for all time TDs & passing yards, and have multiple 5k passing seasons everyone would have laughed at the notion.
Luke McCown in his 1 start with us was just a hair short of a victory, putting together an overall decent game
Teddy Bridgwater was 5-0 as starter
Taysom Hill, for as much as I'm not a fan of his to be a starting caliber NFL QB, Payton did forge a winning record with him which I think is 7-2 with 8TD/4INT.
Jamies Winston was 5-2 as starter with 13TD/3INT

Payton's ability to scheme winning records with Teddy, Taysom & Collins is impressive. His failure to field a good defense in Drew's prime years is what is the only real knock against him

There are no guarantees with any of these players. In the last 5 years the Saints are number 3 in the NFL behind the Ravens and Chiefs in terms being successful in the NFL Draft. I am sure they have a formula whereas they have true first rounders, those that fit into concept and philosophy, and their interview process. I would imagine if they pick a QB than they likely suspect he will be better than Winston, has a true first round grade, and will fit into offensive scheme and design. I honestly don't know what to expect from this draft ,but if they go QB I would not be mad.

As opposed to...Kenny Pickett? Malik Willis? Matt Coral?

If you want some elite vet, you have to cut a starter or 3 to make up the cap difference b/w that guy and Jameis

There is no QB in this draft capable of outperforming Winston. They're all project quarterbacks that need to sit 1-2 years before they can make a dramatic impact. Of the top prospects, only Matt Corral would come close to being pro ready and that's not saying much. None of these guys really have been under-center running 5-7 step drops and play action passes, which is still the bulk of most teams' schemes. If the Saints decide to go with a draft pick for QB1 instead of Winston, you can expect 9-8 as a ceiling and a 0-17 floor.

Every neckbeard on the internet seems to believe this QB class sucks, but it’s going to be funny to watch when 3-5 QBs are taken in the first round.

I’m with you. And I think you saw our FO try to do that with Watson, who is more or less, suspension by the league or more pending allegations not withstanding, one of the surest things in the league at QB.

I think that tells you the FO wants to improve at QB but I can totally see where they’re just not sure on some of these guys this year in the draft like they were with Mahomes and would rather continue getting us out of cap hell while also acquiring talent through the draft to help build a contender around Jameis or whatever QB prospect we draft in 2024 if it doesn’t work out with Jameis. Or maybe they are enamored with a guy and they’re going to take one. Who knows.

My guess is they take BPA at both picks.

This is kind of my stance on it as well. There’s been some mediocre QBs make and even win the whole damn thing. The Ravens won one with fricking Joe Flacco. I think it’s worth taking a risk with Jameis considering how good our roster is. It’s not as good as last years because we lost 3 key starters (2 really since Armstead was always hurt but I digress)

But if you get lucky and hit on an OT, a safety and a WR and get quality starters this year out of those three then you’re WITHOUT QUESTION, in the hunt with Jameis. And there’s enough talent in FA right now that they could always add a guy like Jarvis Landry if they’d rather go OT or Safety in the first round. And vice versa with Tyran Mathieu if they don’t draft a safety. There’s really no point in bitching until we see the draft play out and the immediate aftermath where some of these FAs are waiting to sign until after the draft as well

I would think so too - the good news is that with this ammo they have the flexibility to either move up to get their franchise QB, or just stay put and take BPA. It's nice to have options.

No, the neckbeards are the ones clamoring for the Saints to ignore glaring needs and throw away a 1st round pick on project guys.

The only true "project" is really Willis. Pickett and Corral have been productive for multiple years at the P5 level.

To act like QB isn't a potential option is insane to me - it goes against pretty much all conventional wisdom that has ever been demonstrated in the past in the draft.

Well yeah. But there’s also a chance they could be better than Winston.

We had people melting over the thought of us taking Mac Jones. We had people melting at the thought of us taking Mahomes.

While I don’t think the Saints will reach for a QB, I don’t understand the pre-melt over players who have never played a down in the NFL.

Very small chance.

You can project college guys to the NFL statistically and you can look at traits.

There's one real traits guy (and his stats/CFB history are worrisome in a major way) and none of the QBs have good statistical metrics with any sort of history in projecting pro ability.
