They are not going to move up for a Q.B. in this draft at the expense of not plugging the WR and OL holes that currently exist
You can't assume to "plug holes" with the 16th and 19th overall pick. Have a look at the players taken slots 16-20 in the last several drafts. Some good hits for sure, but mostly meh overall.
No middling team in NFL history (to my knowledge) has traded away a future 1st round to obtain a mid-1st round pick in an attempt to try to get cheap starters. Maybe the Saints think they have the greatest scouting department of all time and are setting some new trend in the league on how to reset their cap woes, but I'm skeptical that's their overall plan.
IMO, having this ammo lets them:
1) move up for a QB if they want, based on how the draft falls
2) trade away a pick to get more capital later (since this draft is deeper than average)
3) just stay put and pray you get 2 players they have ranked highly in a BPA perspective
I don't think it's as cut-and-dry as the fans are making it out to be. This can go several directions.

I think it’s a confident team that thinks they can get 2 instant starters with those two picks. Then the #1 pick they gave up next year which is really just taking the one now instead of 2023 will be in the mid twenties.
So they gave up a 2nd which will be in the 50s as a kicker. Could get and excellent player with another year under their belt. I’m good if they get 2 starting linemen or one and a wideout.
They might luck right into a starting left tackle and a monster d-tackle from Georgia when he falls in our lap at 19.

I can tell you are not a Saints fan because you don’t remember the 12 first round picks we gave up for Davenport
We weren’t a middling team back then - read my post again - we were in a Super Bowl window.
We are a middling team right now.

i know it's NOT A position of need but I love Nakobe Dean at LB. He will be an excellent WLB for whoever picks him right away.
Don't know if Jordan Davis makes it to even #16 but there doesn't seem to be a lot of certainty in this draft so could be excellent steal.

There are a lot of moving parts to think about next season:
- Payton/Allen
- Losing TA/MW
- Kamara possible suspension
- MT13 coming back to play
- We went 9-8 and almost made the playoffs although having to play 4 different QBs, 20+ players out for a Covid game, 20mil receiver out entire year, etc.
Point being, I don't think we're as middling as you state. We were up against the 8-ball last season in a lot of ways with Brees retiring, Jameis ACL, MT13 unavailable, etc. I was actually proud we went 9-8 last season.

We are a playoff team with a competent QB. I mean Taysom and Trevor Semien almost got us to the playoffs with a game where we didn’t have players or coaches because of Covid.

Agreed. I think he has the ability to becomes the next big time LBer like a Ray Lewis, Luke Kuechly or Jonathan Vilma.

I'm all for taking a defensive player with at 16 or 19 if the value is too good to pass up on.
Someone is gonna fall that has no business doing so I think.
Moving up in the 2nd wouldn't shock me either.
They must be thinking Payton is coming back soon and we could be line for compensation?

I am well aware of these options and I also have an opinion and it is they would likely not draft a QB that doesn't have much more potential than the one we have currently and I believe they have the opportunity to draft an upper tier O-lineman and an upper tier WR. That's where most of the talent seems to be this year in the draft and just so happens to be our biggest needs.
