I can't wait for the first 3 & out of the season and OP bumps this thread trying to say this was the reason.

He didn't look like he needed the reps. They cannot afford to let him get hurt in preseason.

There is no QB competition here. It is Winston and then Dalton is the backup. I would not play either of them for the preseason. Why so some flunkie could potentially injure our backup and we are stuck with Book if Winston goes down? Brilliant fricking plan. Dude it is preseason which is practice. This is mainly for the few position battles and edge of the roster ST guys.

Never in the history of the modern game have established starters and veterans had meaningful time in the first couple of preseason games. Two reasons for this:
1- They have 90 guys to evaluate before the first cut day. Why waste meaningful reps on guys you know for a fact won’t get cut? Especially your possible QB1 in this case.
2- It’s preseason, a dress rehearsal for the staff and an evaluation tool. Nothing counts for or against anyone. The Saints lost because the JV blew it at the end. Now Allen and his staff have the data they need to evaluate their roster. Week 2 will be much of the same. Don’t look for the starters to get much PT until the final week, and even then it won’t be a whole game.

Im in understanding that Dalton needs to keep his health but there are good players on the cut line on offensive with a bad player they are banking on.
Not really. You already know your top 2 QBs. You have 4 locks at WR, anyone else needs to also be major contributors in ST. You have 4 TEs that will make the cut. Top 2 RBs are set, battle between Washington & TJJ for #3. Oline starters are set, maybe a few questions about backups.
So the people that really need the reps are WRs that need to make their mark on STs, the #3 RB battle, and your backup oline. Not sure why you’d want Winston or Dalton behind oline players battling for a backup spot

You’re an idiot. You heard it here first

I don’t start a threads to make friends I start my threads to make points.
Usually they are against the grain but I stand by my current point because most here feel Dalton is ready but I assure you he is not. People keep calling this “meaningless” and “dress rehearsal” but the fact he can actually get hurt should tell you this is/was as close to a game environment as it will get before Atlanta and Dalton is in a new offense. I don’t care if second stringers and rotational players are playing with him he is a second stringer himself so he should have some pulse with the guys playing.
The first 2-3 sets of offensive series should all have the men that will make the team in some capacity so Dalton should be working with them and that’s my opinion. Just because he is a Default Starter now doesn’t mean we stop working with them together and place him in a protective bubble.
Again, if he can’t run a certain set of downs till half without getting hurt it’s going be a long season anyway.
I started the thread off wrong by sounding and suggesting he should play the whole game and that was wrong and I agree with that. Book makes me want to turn the TV off in frustration because he isn’t worth continuing with IMO and I feel for the guys doing their best who could contribute if a decent QB was in to prove it with them.
I’ve seen this scenario play out before and going into an important rival game “away” 1st week by pussyfooting around with a career 8-8 QB is no Bueno. Now he is in a much more difficult NFC south division on a new team to me and it’s super important for everyone involved.
Do not care if anyone agrees and we will see.

You pound a bent nail like nobody else.
These games on television are a part of the process to select your best but its only a couple of hours compared to weeks in camp. The coaches...believe it or not see Book, know Book and know what he is doing and not doing far better than us. And they know if that guy trying to make the team was in the right spot even if the ball wasn't. They, the coaches, know what they are doing.
Book is not wrecking guys future no matter how much you think otherwise

Jameis is out 6-8 weeks.
All we have is Dalton.
If Dalton gets hurt, we are beyond fricked.

If Dalton got hurt in a meaningless preseason game playing with chumps around him everyone’s head would be on the chopping block for the decision to leave him in. If Winston’s injured then what you’re left with is the worst starting QB in the league in Book and the whole season is over before it begins. You can’t just say oh well go find a FA qb and plug him in to the starting lineup.
Frankly you’re on an island on your own with your thought process here. Everyone else knows what the preseason is for. It’s for guys pushing to make the roster. Dalton will see more action with the first team in the next preseason games as they get closer to the regular season if Winston isn’t a go.

Bottom line is I don’t trust Dalton. Watched him plenty and maybe the careers “on the line” is a slight exaggeration but he needs as much as he can.
I don’t think meaningful snaps start week one in the NFL with a career #2 guy. Never works out well. Never

The life of a back up QB right there.
Be sure there are a few on Airline Dr feeling the same if JW misses much time.

This keeps getting better. A career #2 guy? Andy Dalton is a 4x Pro Bowler and 2nd all-time passing yards leader for an NFL Franchise. He has never been elite but has always been serviceable and has proven he can win games with pieces around him.
Watching Drew Brees play for 20 years has ruined some of yall. That's not what normal football looks like
That was once in a lifetime, all-time greatness. Andy Dalton can't give you that but he also doesn't need 2 extra preseason series to prepare for the opener.

Because he will be our starter this season

Oh, you assure us….ok. I feel better about your point now.

Dalton playing only one series tells you all you need to know about Winston. It tells you Winston will miss time and Dalton is your week 1 starter.
Did I miss something? Do people think Winston won’t be out there in week 1 from an injury that was said to be nothing serious?
Dalton played one series cause he’s a vet, and his main rb’s and wr’s weren’t even out there. Him playing more served no purpose in this game.
Posted on 8/14/22 at 11:32 am to Morpheus
They pulled the main starters on the offensive line out after the first series too.
There was also a pretty decent size list of guys who weren't active last night for different reasons.
I have absolutely no problem with Dalton playing just one series.

He's been in the league for 11 years. He doesn't need extra preseason reps. Lol
this ^^^^^^^
i too wish he would have gotten to play the full 1st quarter but hes a vet so keeping him healthy is the main goal.
despite the idiots here on ST thinking winston is the best QB who ever lived based only on their fantasy imagination, he is the same guy who he always has been and payton isnt here to hog tie him to keep him from hurting the team. DA will let him do more and that will quickly turn into a shite sandwich
