re: Sean Peyton inquiring about Will Lutz

Love how Grupe has performed but you have to go with Lutz. He had a down year last year but I’ll give him a pass coming off a major injury for a kicker.I think he bounces back this year to be his regular self. That said, this might come down to his contract and how they can save by keeping the cheaper Grupe. My money is Lutz being the Saints kicker though. John Harbaugh knows great kickers when he sees them which is how we got Lutz in the first place. You keep the guy that had proven it before if he’s healthy which it looks like he is and he’s confident again. I just love how Sean thinks he can tell us what we will receive for one of our kickers like he still calls the fricking shots. I’d be tempted to tell him to go frick hi self if I was Loomis and say if you want Lutz it’s a 3rd just for being a douchebag on his way out the door and about how he handled his “retirement”. If it’s Grupe I want a 4th or 5th just because Payton said he will pay a 6th. If he doesn’t like it tell him to keep Brett Maher or whoever the hell he has kicking for him. We aren’t his personal Amazon for players.

They are currently $11m under the cap, so I doubt if Lutz' contract amount matters. He had a horrible last season, but has looked very good so far, so unless he gets the yips soon (or, the dreaded I word), my guess is Lutz stays.

He even admitted he was in his own head last year not trusting he was 100% yet. That’s completely normal for athletes no matter what position you play. Lutz was a still better than Grupe until I’ve seen otherwise. Lutz will be back around his usual 85% on FG attempts this year. Grupe we really don’t know even though he’s looked impressive.

That aside, why wouldn't the Broncos just wait to see who gets released rather than make a trade? That means they are really only looking to trade for Lutz. They aren't making a trade for Grupe. There
BC if another team is having kicking trouble they can throw a 6th or 7th rounder to solve the problem and Denver is stuck holding their stick in the hand. You can’t always wait till a player is released, it’s not guaranteed.

Good maybe we can get a 5th or 4th for him then.
Knowing Loomis he will throw in a 2nd rounder to get the 5th.

quote:Exactly what have you seen that is so impressive? He basically has only kicked extra point length FGs so far. He is tiny and was not great in college. If we did not have an experienced kicker, I would be OK with giving him a shot. But we already have Lutz who has a proven track record. He had an off year last year after coming off of a season ending injury. Otherwise, he was pretty much money.
the kid Grupe has looked impressive which is why Payton is inquiring about Lutz, it might be better to roll with him than Lutz who's best days might be behind him. Idk though, whatever they decide I just hope is the best decision.

Didn't Lutz miss chip shot field goals in two playoff losses? Rams and again to the Bucs
I never cared for the guy. He's a mental midget. That's Sean's handpicked "guy".

Keep Lutz. I rather have an experienced kicker than a rookie we really don’t know a whole lot about
Same..
I remember people got excited over that brian johnson dude after he hit a game. We then ended up going through 2 or 3 kickers because he absolutely fell apart.
All kickers are somewhat flawed. Id still rather lutz than an unknown

quote:he's making his kicks and not missing any, that's impressive enough for me. I don't need to see any bomb kicks from 55, 60 yards away. Just be consistent with making your field goals. But you're reading into my comment a lil too much because I'm not sayin anything about trading Lutz, just making a lil comment about what I've seen from Grupe.
Exactly what have you seen that is so impressive?

it's a kicker who cares

A healthy Lutz is worth more than a 6th round pick.

Why would they trade for either when you can wait until Saints make cuts

Hard to let Grupe walk out the door.
Cheaper alternative and has looked stellar thus far.

The OP states the "Saints will trade the loser of the battle for a 6th round pick". If accurate, that means one of the two will be available (the Saints aren't keeping two kickers). So if Denver wants either, why wouldn't they just wait to see which one gets released? Then they could sign him without giving up a draft pick.
I think either the OP, or the article is a bit poorly written. I'd imagine the actual story is Denver may be willing to trade for Lutz...not either kicker.

Waiver order. By not giving up a draft pick, they would either need the kicker to clear waivers, or use their waiver claim and hope no one ahead of them puts in one as well. And considering the hype around both (especially if Lutz is cut), it is highly unlikely no one will put in a waiver claim.
They also get to take on the current contract, instead of potentially getting into a bidding war and/or just trying to negotiate a new contract.
