But it isn't just a Cooks vs Butler debate. I'd take Butler over him too. It's what can we get for Cooks + other ways of addressing the corner position.

Exactly, his immediate big cap hit makes him much less valuable than Cooks. If you get a mid 1st for cooks and address the CB position and they are half arse decent then you have that need filled for a fraction of the cost for 4-5 more years. Then you can use that extra 8 mil or so to acquire another good FA acquisition. That's why they will need to throw in more than the 32nd if we are giving up our second too.

I don't think I'd ever trade for a Pats player. If they are getting rid of a player, there is a reason behind it.

Agree here.

know he doesn't. But it just seems pointless going somewhere else where your situation will be the same if not worse for you. It's not much benefit for him but at this point I don't care about his happiness. just seems pointless on his end

I think he just doesn't like being used as mainly a vertical route guy. Pats have others that can run too.

The pats run a quick throw offense. We'd likely see Cooks a lot more in the slot there, unlike here, where he can get a free release.

Again though, I'm not sure the current regime is real concerned with 4-5 years from now. I don't think Sean expects to hang around here without Brees. They're concerned with the next 1-2 years IMO and hopefully that doesn't bankrupt the future.

We'd have the same number of picks in both scenarios....

Talib
18th pick (and maybe more)
-3rd rounder

Butler
32nd pick
-2nd rounder

therew quite a long list of guys BB has parted with that were really good. It was never indicative of their talent

I like the idea of swapping picks. But we aren't netting their first along with butler without giving something else. How delusional are our fans, Jesus.

You said the same thing about Pels fans/Boogie a few weeks ago. With Butler's big payday coming up, he probably has a mid-2nd round value (if he had a first round value, teams would be offering him a contract while willing giving up a 1st to the Pats). 32 + a mid 2nd is more valuable than the 18th pick that the Saints supposedly turned down.

And Cooks does have two cheap years. His ~$8m option is relatively cheap. I know you think Cooks is about as valuable as Stills (who is making ~$8m/yr), but it's obvious that a handful of NFL front offices disagree. Again, franchising him in 2019 essentially puts Cooks on a 3yr/~$25m deal.

Did Arizona lose the Chandler Jones trade?

I would say that one is a little different after he was hospitalized prior to their playoff game against the Chiefs because he smoked some bad synth weed. I don't think Bill wanted him much after that

ETA: Also the Pats ended up ultimately turning that into a rookie guard who started the whole season and also Malcolm Mitchell.

No, that isn't obvious and a jump in logic.

Agreed that is likely a jump in logic. Trading Butler, and signing Gilmore doesn't necessarily mean they like Gilmore over Butler, it just gives them the chance to have a #1 CB, and Cooks. It's not like they could trade Gilmore prior to signing him.

Cooks for Butler, #32, and a pick next year would be a slam dunk for the Saints.

An impact defensive player and a pick this year to address numerous needs. And all for a receiver who frankly doesn't want to be here and also has been passed up as best receiver on the team.

Butler and a 2nd seems very fair to both teams IMO.

This. There's no way it's just straight up with Butler being an RFA. We have to sign him to a new deal asap otherwise we're fricked

The Pats are masters at this. They can sign a player like Gilmore and have his contract structured friendly going forward for the next 4 years.

At the same time they want to trade Butler who would stretch the budget the next couple of years for a guy in Cooks that honestly they probably will have moved on from in 2-3 years.

Belichek comes from the Walsh school where he always trades a player when there is still some inherit value to the other team understanding that the value to his is limited.
