The difference between 42 and 32 is actually a big deal because of the 5th year team option that comes with 1st rounders. That said, I'm not the biggest fan of this proposal because of the big contract we'll have to give Butler immediately.

Revised proposal: Patriots send Butler and pick 32 to Saints for Cooks and Saints' 2nd-round pick (No. 42). NO/Butler talk long-term deal.

Ehhhhhhhh I probably would but I wouldn't be in any hurry to accept. Ideally there'd be another pick coming our way as well.

Sean Payton said it will take a lot to get Brandin Cooks. Sources say they still want quality defensive starter, plus draft picks over 2 yrs

Good. I'd rather keep Cooks personally than settle for any run of the mill deal.

If someone blows our balls off, great. Otherwise, frick off.

A problem that I have with this deal (besides the cap space) is that this is a loaded CB draft class. I know Butler is almost certainly better than anyone we draft, especially for a few years, but I think it makes more sense to get Zeitler, deal Cooks for picks, and take our chances on drafting a CB or two while having a lot more cap breathing room over the next 3 or 4 years.

So the Pats signed another corner and are paying him top dollar but didn't want to pay top dollar to this guy who's been on their team for years...hmmm

No he isn't. Cooks murdered Butler is joint practice last year. I'm not down with this trade at all. Especially since NE just signed Gilmore.

It's not a coincidence that NE just signed Gilmore for 14 mill and is trying to get rid of Butler who will command fairly close to that.

We'd basically be doing the super bowl champs a huge favor by giving them 2 cheap years with cooks and us having to pay butler now.

Unless there are multiple high picks involved from NE, saints should definitely not take this deal.

Y'all are being really biased. Butler is definitely an elite corner. Also he's a locker room cancer.

I think that's all the current regime is worried about though. They're not dumb and the clock is ticking on the Payton/Brees era but hopefully they don't screw the organization down the line in a last ditch "win now" effort.

Dude.. Cooks is not that great

Well shite, don't let the Pats, titans, and eagles know that.

His actual play at this point, while important, isn't even the discussion. If he's really having teams offer an 18th pick for him, then that's what I'm currently measuring him as along with his contract and market for young WRs.

quote:

He's just a product of our offense. He didn't even have a good year last year

I mean if being able to fly and running good routes is being a product of our offense...What in his skillet wouldn't transfer to any team?

quote:

but Butler is a far better player and a much needed player to make our team better.

So, is Butler worth the following:

18th pick
$13 million/year
Cap hit that comes if he doesn't work out

When supposedly Talib is on the block, who presents no cap risk, and would likely, at really the most, take a 3rd rounder.

Personally, I'd rather trade the Eagles for their DE + another pick.

18th pick + Talib - 3rd rounder > Malcolm's new contract

Do you think we're going to trade rape the Pats?

I really don't know that that is the case.

We've seen it time and time again from NE.

No, you are being short sighted. Saints have all the leverage. And Butler is not elite. He's very good in the NE scheme. Why not pay Bulter instead of getting Gilmore? This doesn't pass the smell test.

The interesting part to me is the whole reason for Cooks leaving is because he wants to increase his numbers and eventually get paid.

Well, NE he is competing with Gronk, Edelman and Allen who they just got. Plus, NE spreads it around and doesn't hand out big money.

Maybe the Saints flip Butler on Draft day.
