Hmmm. Not sure what to make of it exactly when they explain it both ways. Guess they plan to keep him.

This sets the stage for him to be released or traded before March 17th when his 32M roster bonus becomes fully guaranteed.

Or gives them time to renegotiate an extension

Good riddance to a true headcase who could have been an all time great. Hopefully we can trade him for anything but if we release him that’s a win also

Wishing him the best with his future team. Sad it had to end this way.
From my perspective, it allows us to have Cap flexibility through free agency

No one is trading for him with 32 million GTD

He gone. Frees up cap space and he makes a ton of money to go away?
Posted on 1/7/23 at 11:12 am to LSUZombie
what did MT do that makes him a true head case?
Posted on 1/7/23 at 11:15 am to Safety Blitz
Frees up cap space in 2023 and completely destroys 2024's cap if cut. He isn't going anywhere.

This means Thomas will be a Saint next season and nothing else.

This is effectively a cut
quote:
Basically, this temporarily lowers Thomas’ cap number by about $14 million. And what it almost certainly means is that Thomas got cut on paper with the official move to follow. This is the same type of deal that Drew Brees and Malcolm Jenkins did before retiring.
What this maneuver does is allows the team to stop carrying Thomas’ $15.5 million base salary on the cap. Without the deal, even if the team wanted to cut him, it would have happened after June 1, and that total would have remained on the books until then. Since Thomas was never going to get that money, the team can now walk away from this deal by designating Thomas a post-June 1 cut and he will only count as about $13 million against the cap instead of $28 million.

So he can sit on his a-- for the 3rd year in a row and get paid $10s of millions? F--k him.

I absolutely guarantee most or all of you morons who have been shitting on this guy and the Saints for the past few years are going to flip this and say the Saints are stupid for letting him leave when he’s the best WR in football again somewhere else

So how much do we pay Water Boys anyway these days?
