In their 56-year history the Saints have drafted 1 QB in the 1st round

Archie Manning, 1971.
In 56 years the Saints have drafted as many placekickers in the 1st round (Russell Erxleben, 1979) as they have QB's. I find that shocking for some reason.

Wasn't Dave Wilson a first rounder in the supplemental draft?
Sorry for being tardy.

As bad as this franchise has been that’s absolutely ridiculous

Because our next franchise QB was already in the building

I thought Wuerfell was but he was a 4th. For some reason I had remembered it differently but that was the 90’s. I don’t remember that decade very well.

Drake Maye this year hopefully. I doubt we finish bad enough to get him or Caleb Williams though

Honestly, does anyone trust the Saints to draft a QB in the 1st round?
It’s a recipe for disaster.

Well Dennis Allen isn't making a change at play caller so the good news is the Saints will have a top 10 pick this year.

Had a similar thought before last draft when the board was in a draft a QB frenzy. Crazy thing is when you look at their QB history, you can tell the team thought they had "their guy" in house.
Cuozzo/Kilmer to start off the franchise from 1967-1970.
Draft Archie and he's the guy from 1971-1981
Ken Stabler from 1982-1983
Richard Todd in 1984
Bobby Hebert is now in the building from 1985-1992, with Walsh in 1990 during Hebert's holdout
Walsh/Wilson/Buck in 1993
Everett from 1994-1996
A bunch of shite from 1997-1999
Blake/Brooks in 2000, then Brooks from 2001-2005
Brees 2006-2020
Back to a bunch of shite in 2021-2022, then trading for Carr in 2023
I have no idea what the FO or HC's were thinking going into many of those seasons, but like I said you can tell they thought they had "their guy" so they could draft other positions.

You need a top 10 pick to draft a QB really if not top 3. In the 56 year history, Saints had 49 1 Rd picks. Take out the years Archie and Drew were playing, that leaves 26 picks. Only 6 of those 26 were top 10 picks. 1986 had nobody, 1993 we got Roaf and no good QBs were draftable, 1997 had no 1st rd QBs taken, 1998 same, 1999 was Ricky Williams, 2003 I guess we could have had Byron Leftwich.
It just wasn't there. We needed to lose enough at the right time and didn't.

Bruh. we led the NFL in having the highest number of quarterbacks named Billy Joe on a roster.
that was a time. Heath Shuler was going to be the savior of the franchise. Too bad he was a basket case by the time he got here. Danny Wonderful was the very definition of a "system" quarterback and we were not that system. Vodka Collins made a stop here before resurrecting his career with the Gints.
that leaves us with the Billy Joes. Hobart was the more athletic of the two but was dumb as rocks. Tolliver was short, slow and not very good.
FYI--the aforementioned Dave Wilson started a number of games in 85-86 over cajun cannon. when he was taken in 81 he was supposed to be the heir apparent to Archie Who.

coulda tried trading up to get Bledsoe. Tho Kuharich woulda probably gone for Rick Mirer. i think Finks was done by then. But Mora had Wade Wilson and a stout defense and that two headed monster in the backfield--the Derek Brown/Brad muster duo

There were efforts to try to trade up and get a QB, albeit very futile. We tried the Ricky deal a year earlier to get Manning or Leaf. Of course, nothing says build for the future like offering an entire draft and picks the next year for one player.
But honestly, I'm okay with us not taking a bite of the apple so to speak with drafting QBs in the first round. Take the Jets or Browns, and how many times they have drafted QB in the past two decades and its not worked. It's a gamble and there are no sure bets on drafting a QB. Hell, people thought Ryan Leaf was gonna outperform Manning at one point, and we know that's not true. Instead, Manning's biggest rivals were a 6th rounder from Michigan and a 2nd rounder from Purdue.
It's more about the people in charge finding the right guy than the attempt. And honestly, I don't feel confident in the current staff to make such an investment.
