I suck at capology—Can someone break down why we can’t designate Carr a post 6/1 cut?

What would that do do for his dead cap hit after his restructure? I don’t think we should cut him after this year anyway—there’s almost definitely not gonna be a better option for ‘25.

But my brother insists that we can cut him after June 1st and save enough money for it to be worth it. I keep telling him I think he’s wrong, but don’t have the actual data to provide him with, and I’m sick of fricking arguing with him about it.

NFL cap space for each team in 2025

As usual, nonetheless, the Saints used restructures to open space for the next season. This year, it was an expected adjustment with Derek Carr to clear $23 million in 2024.

However, the change also increased his upcoming cap hits to north of $50 and 60 million in 2025 and 2026, respectively. There's no realistic "out" until 2027, and that assumes no updates to his deal next offseason—which, again, is usually not how New Orleans operates.

Even if the Saints were to make him a post-June 1 cut, their best-case scenario is more than $21 million in dead cap in 2025.

I can make this real simple, ignoring the can kicking it would have down the line: we will likely have to restructure his base salary again to get under the 2025 cap. We need to be able to make more of his cap hit in 2025 go away than what we'd get with a post June 1 cut.

Does that make sense?

The best case for Carr is to trade him if not ride it out and into the ground.

Doesn't help us as much as you think, and no one would take him

Should have bitten the bullet 3-4 years ago.

You could just see this being a.500 to sub-.500 team for the next two or three years, three years ago.

Now, we’re still stuck in salary cap f*cking hell with very little talent and nothing to really build on. For this alone, Loomis should be fired.

You can make Carr at post 6/1 cut. You do eat some money but it frees up 30 million. That’s if OverTheCap is up to date. You can only have 2 post 6/1 cuts. Carr should be one and Kamara the other. Trades involving Lattimore have to also take place post 6/1. But all of that frees up appx 80 million dollars.

Why would we cut Kamara? Hes worth SOMETHING on the trade block, even if it's a 5th -7th.

Right but I suppose if you could get something for him, why not take it and offload a little money. Odds are, we are stuck with his arse

You need to restructure Carr in order to field a team for 2025

It’s been above Loomis for years now. Gayle will go down as the shittiest business person ever to own a NFL franchise. One look at that chart should tell her all she needs to know about where Loomis has led the Saints. We should be Super Bowl contenders with the salaries we’ve paid but are the among the bottom 3 teams currently.

Old Man Benson is rolling in his grave wondering why Gayle shoving her fingers up his arse was persuasive enough to take the team from Rita. Rita was a petulant bitch, but wouldn’t stand for the organizational malpractice we’ve witnessed.

How you fans continue to waste money on season tickets is beyond me.

Yup. Don't know about the rest of you but I expect Carr to be on the books for the rest of the damn decade. And reading really fresh takes on it all for years as well.

I would say your optimistic views on Rita are contrary to history. She was given the keys to a kingdom and shite the bed. Too many posters just moan eternal gloom like Eeyore. Hell we are finally getting what many of them wanted years ago. Suckage to force change. And change is coming. Just when.

I wasn’t optimistic on Rita at all, but she did fire 38 executive assistants. Both choices we had when Tom was alive sucked, but I am confident Rita would’ve made a change at GM years ago. The performance of Loomis is easy to read, and the only thing saving him is Gayle’s love for him. Not a way to run a business.

Rip off the band-aid and be done with it.

Be ok with having a minimum of 2 atrocious seasons while we get fricked in the arse with dead money thanks to Loomis, who fricking sucks.

I’m ready for it and have been for over a year.

The can kicking needs to stop.

You can. You get more money i believe cutting him 6/1 but someone may not want to pay him that and give up picks. Long story short, Lattimore, Kamara, Carr, Jordan can all but cut post 6/1 and save a fortune for this team. So the people saying they can’t get out of his contract are wrong. But, i don’t think they try and get out of it.
