1. Running back - Chris Ivory vs. Travaris Cadet

The conventional thought entering training camp was how on earth could the Saints be able to share the running game wealth among the stable of running backs like Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles, Mark Ingram and Ivory. Who would have thought another undrafted rookie free agent would make you think twice about one of the four backs?

Actually, it shouldn't be as much of a surprise as this scenario seems to occur every year during and after training camp.

Here are the abilities Cadet has displayed through the last couple of weeks: he can run the ball, he can catch out of the backfield (his 14 preseason catches leads the Saints), he has decent pass protection skills and he can be used as a returner (a 21-yard punt return and a 28-yard kick return). Cadet has shown the Saints that he can be more diverse than Ivory and he even saw carries with the first-team offense before Ivory.

Ivory probably still stands as the favorite to hold onto the fourth running back spot with Cadet being a practice squad candidate. But Ivory also struggled with holding onto the football at times during training camp practices with multiple lost fumbles. Don't look past this battle.

Like Larry I think Ivory still has the advantage, but I've been shaking my head watching him this pre-season. I'm not talking about playing behind a crappy 2nd/3rd string o-line. I'm not talking about when he get's hit in the backfield.

I'm talking about when he has adequate blocking and he just wants to unload on a defender and picks up 2 yards. I know that style has worked for him in the past, but if he wants a future in this league he's going to need to diversify.

agreed, Cadet does more things well then Ivory, most importantly might be pass protection, we are very predictable when Ivory is in the game because of his poor pass blocking skills.

Honestly I'm ready to move on from Ivory. He just cant be counted on to stay healthy and hold onto the ball.

Cadet looks good. If he keeps this up, Cadet might get the #3 spot

Ivory has poor vision, the line has created holes, but he doesn't find them. Instead he runs straight into a defender and gains 2 yards

Plus RBs are a dime a dozen so lets keep the guy who is multi-dimensional and doesn't have an injury history

a possible open spot to keep 5 RBs is axing backup FB Korey Hall. He has a good rep but his job is primarily as a special teamer. A backup FB is defintiely not a must-fill roster spot. We've had Thomas or others fill in at FB before. There's FBs to be had waiting by the phone too. If Cadet can prove solid on ST (beyond as a returner) he & Ivory might both show up on the 53.

The Cadet frenzy is a little much in proportion to what he has done too IMO. For reference, here's what PT23 did in the '07 preseason by game to win a spot (granted the competition was nowhere near as tough)...

carries/yds & catches/yds

4/17 2/35
1/1 1/2
1/1 0/0
11/90 0/0 2 TDs
16/81 2/47 1 TD

By playing a lot in the 2nd to last game showed they were looking at him as a regular back not just a fringe player. He cemented his spot the next week with 16 carries. Those two weeks (27/171) 6.3ypc, good hands, and ball security did it.

Let's see if Cadet gets more reps with the ones and how he looks in the last two games before kicking Ivory down the road.

Again, I propose this question, should 2-3 of our RBs get hurt, and we are down to the last guy or 2, do you really want that guy to be Vadet? Ivory has started meaningful NFL games and proved his worth. Who cares how he has played this preseason. They know what he can do

Not to be a smart arse, but Ivory would most likely be in that group of 2-3 who were injured.

I know what you're saying, but he Ivory doesn't quite look himself right now. I guess my best answer is I'm for whoever the staff trust.

That's kind of a cop out answer though. I'm not confident that Ivory can get through 2 games with taking serious and not get an injury of some type, unless he changes his running style.

It changes year to year. I love Ivory (nohomo) but Cadet shows the goods right now

Also, if 2 or 3 of our RB get hurt, chances are he's one of them.

Cadet sure is getting sucked off a lot for a guy that has totaled 15 carries for 23 yards in the preseason. I know Ivory hasn't looked great, but he has shown that he can get it done in the regular season. Ingram is capable of catching the ball out of the backfield. PT is elite on screens and Sproles is the best all around receiving RB in the NFL. We don't need another pass catcher, we need a guy to run the clock at the end of games after PT/Sproles/Ingram did all the dirty work.

PT and Ingram can do that better than Ivory anyway. I just don't feel we need to hold onto Ivory for protection in case the others get hurt. Your 4th RB should be a STs contributor, Ivory gives you no STs support plus he has ball security and injury issues. No saying this new guy is the answer, but just don't think holding onto Ivory is that important!

Unless he plays special teams or one of our top 3 gets hurt, our fourth running back will be inactive every game this season.

This is something to consider during this evaluation...

You don't know anything about football. Zero, zilch, nada.
