I've never seen him short on kicks and kickoffs like yesterday. I know Soldier Field has notoriously "thick" grass that can also be a bit slippery. But for Lutz to be very short on a 52 yarder is crazy.

Dude is greatest kicker in Saints history and all time top 5 kicker in NFL history. Hoping he is back to his usual self next week.

Get those misses out of the way before the playoffs

Has he ever missed a "must have" kick? I honestly can't remember one.

Sure all misses suck, but I don't think there's ever been a game-tying or go-ahead late FG that he has missed. The few that I remember were like yesterday where it was either early or a double-digit score differential, etc.

Bears kickers have proven that Soldier Field is a difficult place to kick.

You said it yourself. Soldier Field is one of the most difficult venues to kick field goals. Considering the swirling wind and tall grass and I can't think of a more difficult place off the top of my head.

Maybe Green Bay in the middle of December?

Hopefully Lutz has it out of his system now.

It is Chicago that is probably the hardest place to kick.

You can thank those frickers at Fox for jinxing him by continuing to post the graphic about his consecutive made FG streak

I think the first miss was just a push. Could’ve happened anywhere and he probably would tell you that. Being short on the 52 yarder was all Soldier Field - wind, damp conditions, long grass, sketchy footing.

I’d say he had 1 legit miss and 1 you could forgive him for.

It's the grass. Remember the Bears themselves missed a fairly easy kick to win the game in the Wild Card round last year.

Weather-wise the two fields are a push but Green Bay actually does a better job with their field & the grass on it than does Chicago.

Greg zuelein has had an off year. Justin tucker missed the game tieing XP last year.

The best of the best have off days.

You could see the reduced distance on his kickoffs. Normally he’s sailing it out the end zone but yesterday he was struggling to get it to the goal line.

The weather and field conditions were real factors. If you’ve ever been down on Lake Michigan in fall or winter, it ain’t no joke.

Just like any other position, we have gotten spoiled with consistency at kicker. There was a time in the very recent past when the Saints didn't have that. Lutz has earned a bad day assuming it doesn't linger, and I'm pretty confident that it won't. The short kick surprised the hell out of me, but I'm writing that off to Soldier Field grass.

Just stop

He's the best we've had in a while but he's got a long way to go to be on the same level as Morton Anderson. For fricks sake...

Did you know Chicago is where kickers go to die.

Exactly. Like I said earlier the push was a legit miss but it ended up not mattering. At this point, I think Lutz has earned enough goodwill where you can’t be mad that he missed one he normally makes 99/100.

The other miss was all on the conditions. Now had these 2 misses happened in the Dome, there would be a little cause for concern. Still would rather have him over any other kicker in the league except MAYBE Justin Tucker. And we all know even he misses a gimmie once in awhile.

Just to further illustrate the point about the conditions in Chicago, Kevin Butler and Robbie Gould are probably the two best kickers in the Bears’ franchise history.

Their career numbers from 40-49 and 50-59 are not great by any measurement. And those two guys were terrific kickers.

Being forced to kick in Chicago is some sort of placekicker purgatory.

The playing surface at Solider Field is garbage and it only gets worse the further into the year we get. As everyone else has said that has a big impact on kickers, also plays like Apple slipping.
