Future of Ryan Ramczyk

Listening to Underhill’s pod today and he mentioned that the knee injury RR has is degenerative and will not get better. He’s been on load management in practice for 2 years now despite being in his 20’s.
His dead cap hit this year and 2024 is cost prohibitive. In 2025 it drops to $18mm, then a big drop to $8mm and $2mm in 2026 and 27.
I think the end is really near for Ramczyk and that’s a bummer. He was on a 100% hall of fame path in 2019 and now I think there’s a good possibility he’s off the team by age 31.

Hope Underhill is wrong on this one. Ram has been a great RT.

This tracks PFF data, IIRC, which says he's already in decline. It sucks. Injuries are a bitch.
Ram having to retire quickly is one variable that scares me re: our cap shenanigans. All it takes is one of those events not in the plan and we have to blow it all up.

His play has fallen off. Idk if PFF agrees but the eye test says he has. I got slammed for saying he shouldn’t be in the Saints long term plans but it’s alarming af when a 28 year old is on load management every week.
It does suck

"Taysom, you're needed in the Olineman room"

I agree and I listened to the pod but I'd say you have to include the context that Nick still rated him the 2nd best player on the team headed into the season. I don't think he does that if he thinks what he's heard means he won't ever be good again

Agreed. He’s still definitely a top tier RT for right now. But it’s something you have to consider with his dead cap hit having a pretty sharp decline in a couple years.

I will lay money on Ram's longevity over say MT's.

This has been known for over a year now. It showed in his play last year, he definitely isn’t as quick as he used to be. It’s bad enough now that he doesn’t practice during the season anymore; he just rests during the week so he can play in the game. The Saints would like that contract they handed out back but at the time he was well worth that deal as he was the best RT in the NFL. Now we just have to hope he has a couple more solid seasons left in him before his body breaks down. I think we might end up seeing Trevor Penning be the heir apparent at RT. He will stay on the left side right now but he just looks like a RT to me. Either way I expect the Saints to draft another OT with one of their top picks in the next couple years.

The problem is we have to keep restructuring that contract every year.
If we didn't manage the cap the way we do, he'd likely have been cut this offseason and we wouldn't have the albatross hanging over us.

Knee issue aside, damn near all the elite vet OTs are on load management schedules. Not a bad thing imo

You’re a broken record, man. Cap hasn’t meant shite to this team in over a decade.

Underhill is the biggest homer pumper that covers the Saints. It pains him to report that about Ram, means he’s in quick decline and probably done.

Sorry, didn’t intend to make your next point for you.

When he's had enough he will retire and walk away
rumors were out there last year that he may walk away

Sounds similar to Jamaal Brown’s career

even with him being banged up the way has been and is, He's the best we've got until proven otherwise.
