Fair compensation for Payton

I think Tampa set the benchmark with Gruden. They gave the Raiders a 1st and 2nd in 2002 (21st and 53rd overall. A 1st in 2003 32nd overall. A 2nd in 2004 (33rd) overall and
$8 mil. cash. The Raiders were originally asking for all those picks plus Warren Sapp. Gruden's record as a head coach at the time was 38-26. Payton's is currently 152-89.
Time for the front office to play hardball.

That was a very different situation though. We won’t get that much in our situation. Sounds like we will get a 1st though.

This Payton trade has become much more high profile than the Gruden trade, which just came out of nowhere. The suitors are lining up. The saints have an incredible opportunity here.

The bottom line is that you’re trading for a Super Bowl winning coach who presided over one of the most prolific offenses in history during his tenure with the Saints. This is not an ordinary coach. You pay. Bigtime. The Saints front office better not roll over on this one. They NEED this trade.

His aggressive coaching style and offensive specialization instantly improve any team by a minimum of 3-4 wins alone.

Arians didn’t half 20% of Payton’s resume going into that year and was basically going to be fired anyhow. Saints have a head coach in place and have no reason to rush on this. They have almost all of the leverage.

My bottom price would be a 1st and 2nd. They don’t have to be in the same year but I’m not taking less and Loomis is an idiot if he thinks teams won’t pay that. He’s worth more than that really but getting 2 too 60 picks would be a good start to a rebuild.

That's why the front office needs to play hardball. In 1999 I believe Seattle vastly under paid for Mike Holmgren with Green Bay letting him go for just a 2nd rd. pick. I think Payton could bring on a bidding war if our front office doesn't blink.
