There’s pros and cons to all these jobs.

Cons: Bad cap situation, rebuild is needed, star players are aging, void in young talent, owner isn’t as rich as some other owners, management decisions have been suspect.

Pros: Owner will not be overbearing, GM has shown history of trying to sign players and work with coach, smaller media market so hot seat won’t be as hot as a New York or Dallas job, hasn’t been that long since winning culture was in place, replacing an incompetent head coach nobody liked (unlike a CSP, Belichick, etc.), Division isn’t dominated by one team every year.

or Gayle hire someone even worse than Loomis.

Not possible. A broomstick with a mop bucket for a head would be better.

Hands off ownership would appeal to established coach who could be handed the keys.

The lack of juice the city and owner have (as discovered by Payton when he hit the eject button) and her ability to attract talent is the major downside.

All in all the article is spot on; the job sucks which is why when the dust settles Rizzi, Aaron Glenn, or Vanc e Joseph will likely get the gig.

When the owner is dogshit (as an owner not a person) who would want the job?

The Saints don't have that excuse or really any reason to operate the way they have over the past few years now that Drew Brees and Sean Payton have both left town.

Other than Carr in 2023, have they really gone after those big contracts that past 3 years since Payton left? I know they were pretty quiet this offseason until they got caught in the Adams trade scenario (probably DA pushing to save his job), but I cannot recall who they went after in 2022. My mind is probably intentionally blocking it out.

A new coach coming in concerns me that they may get back to reckless spending to satisfy the new hire, but the lack of movement this offseason, trading Latt, AK's extension lets me hope they are trying to keep from being far and away the worst managed team from a cap standpoint. Will take a few years, but have to start sometime.

Penning's fifth-year option looming as a difficult call.

Should not be that difficult. Only reason he should still be here in 2026 is if he signs a new contract after becoming a FA in 2025 based on his actual value. To put in perspective, Slater signed his 5th year option with LAC and will get $19M guaranteed next year

It actually is a positive. If you are a coach. You can suck at your job and get years to show it.

Look at Willie green, Dennis Allen and Loomis….

That’s about the only positive. Roster sucks, cap sucks, medical staff sucks, scouting department sucks, city and region not conducive to attracting organization talent, etc.

There’s a legit reason it’s the worst opening and job in the NFL. The cons far outweighed the pros which is why our HOF coach quit and left for greener pastures to the point of hamstringing himself giving up a 1st round pick. It was at least the 3rd time he tried to leave.

You see the point, it’s time to sell the team.

First-round picks Taliese Fuaga and Trevor Penning are works in progress at tackle as opposed to immediate solutions

Bad take right here. Fuaga is a rookie, but he shut down both Parsons and Garrett, two of the best in the league. Penning is a work in progress somewhat, but he should only get better as he gets more comfortable at right tackle with playing time. It’s a miracle he has been able to salvage his career.

Not sure that’s true either, both of her organizations are a laughing stock at the moment. She just cares about cashing Tom’s checks and being a philanthropist in Nola…

It’ll be Rizzi. Accept that now. Our lazy joke of a GM will pinpoint the Cleveland game to sell it to the fanbase.
Hiring Rizzi would make me not renew my Season Tickets.

I actually think the Jets and Raiders are worse. They are disfunctional franchises. Saints just need to make tough choices and suck it up for two years.

I agree. They don't have the ability to be good again for a few seasons, PLUS there's Loomis.

Biggest Con - Loomis

Bad untouchable GM

Also a big Con - owner doesn't care about winning, just not being a laughing stock of the city.

nah, the biggest con is that there's almost zero chance of success due to the roster/cap issues.

you'll get a guy willing to cash a check...but that's pretty much it.

Assuming (and I think correctly) that none of the top coaching candidates are going to choose the Saints job over teams with better rosters and better available cap $$$ to spend then Rizzi could be a good choice to HC the team through cleaning up the salary cap and maybe lightning strikes and he becomes that hidden gem that can continue into the future. If he fails then you replace him in 2027 when the team will be looking at a much better cap situation and hopefully figure out how to stockpile draft picks.

That is basically the short leash I had in mind but you stated it more clearly than I did, for sure.

The other path would be to accept reality and begin a difficult rebuild. It'll take two years to get the bad contracts off the long-abused Saints' cap sheet, and what happens over that time span won't be pretty. This Mickey Loomis-led front office had an all-timer of a draft in 2017, but the results since then have been mixed. It remains to be seen if ownership lets Loomis and assistant GM Jeff Ireland handle the rebuild when it does come. The Benson family has been willing to pay massive bonuses up front year after year as part of restructures for the Saints to keep their cap afloat and shown plenty of patience as the organization tries to rebuild a post-Brees identity. Unfortunately, it might have been too much patience.

Loomis needs to get his head out of his arse & just begin to get this over with. It's the only way otherwise he needs to resign & let another GM begin the process.
