Dolphins punished for impermissible contact with Payton

Dolphins lost a 2023 1st and 2024 3rd for tampering. Also were fined 1.5 million. Looks like it was because of a combination of Payton and Brady.

The NFL said discussions with Sean Payton "occurred before Coach Payton announced his decision to retire as head coach of the Saints. Following that announcement, Miami requested permission to speak with Coach Payton for the first time, which New Orleans declined to grant."

"The investigators found tampering violations of unprecedented scope and severity. I know of no prior instance of a team violating the prohibition on tampering with both a head coach and star player, to the potential detriment of multiple other clubs, over a period of years.”

The saints would be forced to give up 2 first and be fined 600k

NFL would abolish the franchise

So it wasnt about taking a break....he just didnt want to coach in NOLA anymore.

I'm surprised it doesn't say, the Saints are fined 1.5 mil and lose all 2023 picks for not knowing someone was talking to their coach.

Our coach quit bc of impermissible contact by another team. We should be awarded the penalty compensation.

Well, he didn’t take the job so I’m pretty sure it is about taking a break then maybe moving out of New Orleans to a nicer city.

The Saints were harmed in this deal. They should receive the picks. Payton should be punished as well.

Well, he couldn't take the job without Saints permission. And if the Saints found out about the contact, they very well could have told him to frick off if you think we will allow it now.

If nothing else, this is justification for the Saints to play hardball with Payton when it's time.

Probably but it was always going to be a trade scenario. Plus, the saints would never do that to Payton. Mrs Benson and Loomis have way too much respect for what he’s done for this team. They would grant him that if he wanted.

Eh playing hardball would be dumb. Just agree to trade him and bring in as big of a haul as possible. The man still brought us a super bowl and deserves respect for that. He completely changed this franchise.

Saints deserve a comp pick for these activities

What did Payton do wrong? I don’t see anything reported that he first engaged the dolphins or was even receptive to them.
If anything, I think it’s likely Payton reported it back to the Saints and that’s why we denied their permission to speak with him

That's playing hardball. You demand a big haul or you force him to sit out.

It's a HUGE deal to be speaking with another franchise about a job while under contract. While I appreciate his time here, you can't just ignore this.
The cost of the Saints letting him coach should be two #1s and and a #3.

I was triggered. I need a '23 1st to be able to live a normal life now.

it's been pretty well known that he quit on the team and city.

NFL doesn't care about the people that are tampered with. Us, Deshaun Watson rub and tuggers, etc.

Somehow Brian Flores will tie this to his law suit. Damn racist tampering Fish.

You could argue that it caused us harm, as the discussions could be what led him to stepdown.
