Radio host and Fox Sports personality Colin Cowherd has linked former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton with the Washington Commanders instead of the Dallas Cowboys.
"No bad contracts, they can cut Carson Wentz tomorrow," Cowherd said of the Commanders during an edition of "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," as shared by Wil Leitner of iHeartRadio. "They have several great young players at key positions. Edge rusher, receiver, left tackle, running back… Key positions, they’ve got them. They need to upgrade the offensive line a little, they need a quarterback."

Cowherd offered his take after ESPN NFL insider Dianna Russini raised eyebrows when she tweeted earlier this week that an unnamed club was "waiting in the wings" and getting "ducks in a row" in case Payton didn't accept a job presumably ahead of this coming weekend:
"She has very good contact with the Commanders people," Cowherd said of Russini.

Many assumed Russini was talking about the Cowboys because Payton spent three years working for the franchise in the 2000s and was thought to be a longtime target of team owner and general manager Jerry Jones. Jones indicated after this past Sunday's 19-12 playoff loss at the San Francisco 49ers that Mike McCarthy would remain his head coach, and there's no sign Jones has since experienced a change of heart.
Ron Rivera guided a Washington team that started Wentz, Taylor Heinicke and rookie Sam Howell at quarterback to a respectable 8-8-1 record this season, and there's zero reason to believe Rivera is going anywhere. As for Payton, Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post noted Thursday afternoon that it seems the 59-year-old could spend another campaign as an NFL analyst for Fox unless a surprise team such as Washington comes calling.

For what it's worth, former NFL executive Mike Tannenbaum said in November he thought Payton and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady "could be a package deal" for a team this winter. Brady can hit free agency when the new league year opens in March, and Washington could use an upgrade at the sport's most important position who could also serve as a mentor for Howell.

The guy openly admits that he makes up stories so he can entertain and in the off chance that one is true he can beat his chest about it. He’s probably the worst of all sports media.

I mean Sean’s gotta be freaking out. He’s acting like no one wants him.

Well to be fair. CSP goes on Cowherds show weekly. Maybe he has some insight?

That would be very good for the Saints.

Ask for a 2024 first.

Trade Hill and Thomas for a 2023 1st

Last week he was basically saying Denver was in the bag.

Can't see that happening unless Payton really likes what he sees in Sam Howell. Finding a quarterback is the hard part and I don't think Sean wants the responsibility of developing one at this point. Needs to be a "as-is" situation where he walks in and his bed is made.

Right now the only QB ready suitors are Denver and Arizona and both are questionable "QB-ready" all things considered.

He sits out another year, say teams such as:

Miami crumbles
Buffalo chokes
LA chargers underperform
Dallas chokes
Seattle - Pete retires

that's 5 better QB situations IMHO

At this point, I'd be surprised if Sean isn't offered the AZ job.

This is always about Payton picking the team, not really team picking Payton

If his source is Payton, then it's not surprising that he thought Denver was a lock..

Payton has been going around telling the media what the Saints will get for him, and Mickey finally nutted up and released the Saints' asking price

The haul SHOULD be somewhere slightly lower than what Mickey asked for, but Payton is poisoning the well by signaling that he loves certain destinations

He throws shite against the wall to see what sticks. Earlier this week, wasnt Denver basically a lock to get him?

Sean isnt as saught after as he wants to be. He has been exposed as a coach, who cant win without Brees. And quit on the face of adversity.

He's a cardinal or he is back in the booth

All I know it there's a lot of smoke about how CSP might go back to Fox, and the interest in him as HC is cooling off and he may not get an offer and have to go back to TV.

This tells me a deal is close with someone.

My guess is still Arizona and his team is just floating a lot of these "storys" to steer negotiations.

So he said to himself “I have a long radio show to fill, why don’t I pick one of the biggest stories in the news and then make an argument why it could be a team no one is talking about in order to get people talking and raise my clout”. Maybe I’ll even show up on a bunch of team chat boards…

IMO, Washington makes a ton of sense if Jeff Bezos buys the team. He would be the richest owner (so money isn't a problem) that has no loyalty to anyone in the front office (so Payton can install his team and run operations). A guy like Bezos is not a football guy, so he would be more inclined to let Payton setup the team anyway he wants.

Throw in that the Redskins have a ton of young talent and could afford to give up a few high picks to get him. All he would need to do is find a decent QB and he would have that team contending next year.

aren't Ron and Sean friends? I don't think he'd be for pulling the rug out from him weeks after the season ended

You really think Sean is going to go coach for the shittiest owner in the league? Never going to happen.
